It's going to take you an hour to get to the Steeplechase parking lot? Roll eyes Wow, i'm glad I didn't go. I just got back from the vet. I can't take Ernie (dog) to UT...they told me the minimum amount it's going to cost me is $1500. I'm scared the actual price will be much more. The most I would be able to afford would be $1500, and that's pushing it. It's really frustrating because I don't want him to be in pain anymore but I don't know what to do for him to get him the help he needs. They're supposed to refer me to a veterinary specialist here in Nashville that can do a scope. Which is what UT was going to do except they were going to use a balloon too. I don't really understand why they wouldn't be able to see whatever it is (if anything) in there causing him to keep getting blocked with the scope. But then again I really don't even know what the balloon is or does. I'm kind of mad because they won't refer me until tomorrow because it's Ernies vets day off. I don't understand why they can't just give me the vets name and let me call and get him in today. I've looked online but can't find any specialists. They charged me $500 for all the crap they did to him this time, which I think is what i've payed the last few times this has happened too...I hope deciding not to take him to UT isn't going to cost me more in the long run. The thing is the dog is so young and I just wish money wasn't an object because if I can't afford to get him what he needs there aren't really many other options besides him being on pain killers the rest of his life and getting catheterized everytime he's blocked...And that's no way to live. Sad

He's a dog. If you love him, there is a much less expensive way to go. And scopes and treatments and painkillers ain't it.

      Oh Mighty Wing

I am so sorry to hear about your dog. The poor guy. I couldn't afford all of that especially not at $500 a pop. I would have to go with Trent's suggestion. It's sad, but him being in that much pain isn't worth it especially if i can't pay to get it fixed. (or I would try to find a rich person to adopt him)

          I'm so sorry, Candice.

          Lazy idiot

I've resisted replying to this because I wasn't sure I wanted to put in writing what I felt, but Trent pretty much did that. Candice, I'm terribly sorry to hear about what's happening to your dog. I'm not a dog owner (yes, I own felines, that's how I roll, JK), but I've been through similar situations with my pets (cats and dogs) over the years. It sucks. There's no other way to put it. But while I may love my pets dearly, the moment that they start to cost me too much more than the normal food and regular care bills and no end is in sight, it's time for me to consider the painful alternative. I couldn't afford to do what you've done so far, and certainly not what the vets have put in front of you. If you can do it, and you want to (and think it will help your dog), then do it. But if the chances are slim of fixing the situation, or you can't/shouldn't afford it, at least think about putting him down. I'm sure this hasn't helped much, but wanted you to know that I was thinking about ya.

Put differently: scopes and painkillers extend and cause suffering. And yes, I too am very sorry.

A serious (for real) question that'll probably get shot down in a heartbeat, but here it is: anybody besides me up for a fundraiser? Have a big party in Nashville, charge at the door, proceeds go to Ernie? Or something online? $1500 sounds big, but its tiny when you get enough people chipping in. Just sayin'. If nothing else it'd be an excuse for a party. MTA: all of the above assumes Ernie can be fixed up and made healthy again.

I'd be willing to help with the above idea. I've seen that done before among musician friends as fundraisers for anything from pets to rent to medical bills.

And Trent knows every single person in Nashville. It'd be easy.

Good idea, JK. I know judgment gets severely clouded when the money becomes an issue.
You guys are so sweet. Thanks so much for the offer. Right now it's kind of a waiting game....i'm not sure what to do or what it's going to cost. I can't go get a 2nd opinion because they'll just have to redo all the tests and that'll be $500 more... although i'd like to because i'm really pissed with how they do things there. They won't tell me anything because the vet that worked with him yesterday isn't there today so I have to wait until tomorrow to get a referral to the specialist here in Nashville (who can do the scope).... but if it's the balloon he needs instead of the scope to find out what's wrong then I should have just taken him to UT. And if that's the case...well, I really can't take him to UT....but I won't know anything until tomorrow I guess Undecided I know what needs to be done if it comes to that (putting him down) but right now if there's still a chance we can get it figured out without taking him to UT, I want to. He's only 3 and otherwise he's a happy healthy dog. They put him on a prescription diet food specifically for urinary problems today. Dalmatians are prone to having these types of issues so the food is made for them. Maybe it'll help some. If it's a tumor they said they can't remove it anywhere in Nashville and he will have to go to UT for surgery because it's likely so far up his uretha that it's near his anus. Blah. All he wants to do today is sit here and stare at me with his big eyes. I wish animals could talk so they could tell you what to do for them. I guess then they would lose their appeal though...lol

                        Why is it sideways?

                          That sucks, Candice. Sorry.
