I don't usually sleep in a snowbank, but when I do............ (Read 56 times)

had a fun little snowshoe outing, was cut short by all things- rain!  when I turned in, it was probably 15-20 degrees, was figuring it might get down to the single digits, woke up around 5:00 am to the sound of rain hitting my sled that I had rigged as my door

as soon as it got near light, I hastily packed up and got off the mountain- I've always found cold rain to be the most dangerous of conditions being out

still had a good time though!

    snug as a bug

of course it starts breaking up as I'm half way down, typical

Ummm no thanks...too cold!  I noticed the wife stayed home.    Funny hiw the colder dryer the sniw is the easier it is to stay warm.

Looks like fun, minus the rain.  How did the pulk work out?

yup- wife didn't want anything to do w/ it; said something along the lines of "that's about the dumbest thing I've heard of"

yes also on the weather, dry and cold is easier to deal w/- start adding rain and things can go to hell in a hand bucket pretty quick; avy danger starts to go way up too

definitely a good trip!  pulk is working well- I added a harness to my lumbar pack and makes it pulling it better; I was surprised coming down how steep it seemed, was fine going up

Looks like an awesome adventure! Just the rain... rain and cold don't go well together for me.

What kind of sleeping bag do you use, and what kind of cover (don't recall the English word for it right now)?

            Run for fun.

yeah- who have thought, middle of winter, ~ 6500', 2+ feet of snow, 20 degrees and falling in the evening!

I was using a Marmot Helium- rated to 15 degrees, with the snow trench I could have probably gotten by w/ my 30 degree bag- the 15 degree bag gave me a little margin of error, which in the winter isn't a bad thing

the bivy is made by Mountain Laurel Designs, it has a cuben fiber bottom and a eVENT top- the eVENT is 100% waterproof (as is the cuben), but actually breathes pretty well- I got the bivy for overnight running trips, but it's a great shelter for using snow trenches, snow caves, etc

Just a bivy?  Not even a tarp with you?  Hardcore!  I'm not sleeping on the ground when it's covered in snow.  Nope, nope, nope.

                Running is dumb.

you'd be surprised how nice it is in a snow trench (or snow cave); snow is a wonderful insulator and keeps interior temps pretty close to freezing- now if you happen to be claustrophobic..........
