NHLA

7 miles fri in the rain.  7 miles sat. Looking Glass Mt. This is one of the most popular trails. 3.5 miles 1300' climb then you go back down.

9 miles sun. Estatoe Trail easy and flat run perfect day for running. Foot feels great need to start building up miles again.

qotd  How much fitness do you lose with a three week layoff?  I really don't feel like I lost much but I was really sore after Looking Glass run.

Staying around 30mpw for awile just to be careful. I feel great so I think I needed a rest.

Morning, trailers!  rest day for me and yoga at lunch today.  Worked out the quad last night and it was definitely much tighter than the left, so I can see where I was running 'unbalanced'.

NHLA- glad to hear the foot is better.

qotd:  I don't think you'd lose much and if you're cross training, I think breaks can really help you in the long run-- both physically and mentally.

I won some money in the Powerball, only $4.00. I'll re-invest for the 1.3 billion. I'll run 5 or 6 after work, probably in the dark.

QOTD: Good question. I ran a 100 miler in mid-november, took a couple of days off. I started sort of recovery running for the next few weeks and paced 40 miles at Cajun Coyote in early December, which was mostly walking very fast. I sort of goofed off the next three weeks, running 5's and 6's quite a bit, some fast, some slow. This weekend I ran a 5+ hour run on some very technical trails and thought I was going to die the first 10 miles. But I think that was due to mainly starting in a hydration deficit. I have been pretty focused at work and neglected to drink water like I usually do for the whole week. Once I got hydrated at about 11 miles, I was fine the rest of the way. So, I don't think you lose a lot, but what you do lose comes back fast when you have a solid base. Endurance builds slowly and fades slowly; I believe that to be true. I sure hope so because I have another 100 in March.

          5.7 road miles this morning.

QOTD I don't think I lose too much. I just took a few weeks off to figure out my knee problem. (It's a sciatic nerve issue going up and down my leg). My bigger problem was putting I weight on over the break.

          Faster Than Your Couch!

Cold and sunny today, so I'll be heading out soon. Glad I got the day off from work.

QOTD: I always suspected something's wrong with me in terms of fitness. I loose it very quickly, despite me having kept up running, biking, swimming, cardio, etc. all throughout my life. You'd think that would maintain some "muscle memory" or a certain degree of fitness. Not me. If I don't run or cross-train for 3 weeks straight, I'll be back to not even being able to run a whole mile without stopping.

If I don't run 3 days straight (which I used to do when tapering for ultras), I have trouble running the first 5 or 6 miles. I get dizzy and it feels incredibly hard. Once I recover, I can go on forever then, though. But it has made me change my tapering routine.

I always seem to maintain some basic fitness and endurance even when I don't exercise, but I think that's because I am rather restless and then walk briskly a lot.

So that's why I have to keep running at all times - use it or loose it, that's my middle name!

            Run for fun.

I so wish I could report going for a run.  I am barely able to get around the house with crutches or a walker.  Back in the ER again last night.  This really sucks.  The idiots lost not one but two different cultures from two different visits.  I hope I am on the right track now, but it is hard to know when we don't have a wound culture.  They took a third one last night.

I have been in the ER three times in a week and admitted twice.  I am really starting to hate hospitals.  The level of carelessness and incompetence I have seen is downright terrifying.  Some of my caregivers were very nice and caring people, but the number of times the ball has been dropped is just crazy.

              qotd: IME, not very much.

Oh, BTW DD and SIL took pity on Marley and took her out for a "pack run" with her BFF Chloe.  She was so happy!

Usually a SRD, but might add a few road miles over lunch for stress relief.

NHLA - glad you are on the mend.

TT - That sucks. You need to find a different hospital system.  No excuse for ever losing a culture as with today's tracking labels it is almost impossible to do (at least in our hospital).

Muppy - I'm with you on the holiday weight gain. Damn cookies!

QOTD:  Luckily, I've never taken more than 10 days off (for knee surgery on meniscus) so don't know how my body would react to 3 weeks.  Agree with LB, that endurance should hold up, I might see a drop in my already slowing speed.

                “Paralysis-to-50k” training plan is underway!

It was cold this morning with a stiff wind so I did 6 mile worth of intervals on the treadmill. Treadmill stuff always turns into speed work mostly because I get bored and start speeding up the belt just to get it over with.

QOTD: I'm with Couch on this, I took a few weeks off with a few weeks of start and stop trying to get through a bad case of PF and it took me a couple of weeks just to get back to the point were 6 mile didn't totally destroy me.

Goal was to get up at 6 and drink coffee, make lunch, loosen up the ankle and than go for a run.  Heard first alarm but never second one, and got up at 6:45 and managed to get 4.75 run in. Gym at lunch.

QOTD:  I guessing it depends on your age and how fit you really are.  Not to mention if you continue other activities (swimming, biking and/or gym) .

Sadly it is the better of the two hospitals in the area.  I would need to travel pretty far to find another one.

Since late November I have had two nasty infections, one in November (thumb) and the recent leg infection.  Overall there were 6 times that a culture was either ordered or at least obviously needed.  Out of those six times one actually was done and results received and one that is hopefully pending results.  The other 4 were either lost or not taken.  I think we figured out what happened to one.

When DW watched them take one last night she realized that the previous one was not handled properly.  She said that they didn't put on a label and then stuck it in their pocket.  So apparently and end of shift they didn't remember whose it was or worse yet couldn't be bothered to get a label.  Either way I suspect it was pitched in the trash.

Three  times even though there was an obviously serious infection and they said they were taking a culture, but I suspect they either forgot or just didn't bother.  That or it was lost in process with no record.

As a patient, I guess I need to pay a lot more attention and monitor them closely.  That would have helped with some of the comedy of errors that I have seen here, but some of the errors were errors that I couldn't be expected to have enough medical knowledge to recognize.

If I had it to do over, I'd insist on and watch them take the cultures on first visit noting how they handle and label them.  I would also start asking to see an Infectious Disease specialist early in the process.

Spending the day at work running from call to call. It's been busy so far but all bull$hit stuff. Maybe some lifting tonight if I get out on time.

Had a episode on last Thursday's run where I just about got eaten by two dogs, seriously thought they had me. The dog situation in my area is getting out of control.  Still has me a little scared to let DW and DD go out alone.

TT - I understand what you're going through with the medical field. The big problem is that large amounts of people employed in our healthcare system no longer care.  That's why I'm all for some aspects of Obamacare, such as reducing payment if patients aren't happy.  It's really gotten bad in the past five years.

QOTD: I'm one that loses a lot. Like almost all of it. I can run a marathon, take three weeks off, start over and have to walk some on a 7 mile run. It's disgusting how quick I lose it.

Yesterday the Lady and I ran 13 warm sloppy miles on the trails around Green Lane Reservoir. Seriously muddy and messy from fairly heavy overnight rain. But hey it was warm short sleeve weather. Polar (haha, pun intended) opposite today. Clear and sunny with icy cold gusty wind from the Northwest. I hit the road today at lunchtime for 8 miles. It was fairly shocking at first, but after a few miles I considered it brisk and refreshing and then the wind was behind me for the last few miles.

QOTD: I personally have had very few periods of time where I took 3 weeks off. Maybe 2 or 3 times? Coming back was no big deal but I did not jump back into long runs or every day running immediately either.

Muppy - Sciatic nerve pain is a symptom of an underlying issue. So while the pain feel is sciatic nerve pain you must find the issue that causing the nerve to fire. Trust me, you don't to run Hynder with sciatic nerve pain. Ouch.

Couch - That is odd how quickly you lose fitness. MMT lottery tomorrow.. good luck!

TrailTromper - Sorry to read of your leg and infection woes. I hope you are on upswing to health very soon.

DayDreamer - Geez, sorry about the dogs. I love dogs but there are definitely irresponsible dog owners. I am guessing unleashed dogs out on back roads?

In dog beers, I've only had one.

Just shy of 7 in the icy cold wind. It took a while before my breathing got used to it, but then it was a great run. Now if I just hadn't started the out-and-back with tailwind,...   and of course, the wind did NOT change direction, like it usually would if I had started out with a headwind.

Taper: Good luck to you, too. I hope we'll both get in right away!

TT: I am so sorry to hear your hospital troubles. Maybe it is worth to take the longer drive? That's what I'd consider if their handling of samples would not improve. I really hope things will work out well quickly for you!

QOTD I don't think I lose too much. I just took a few weeks off to figure out my knee problem. (It's a sciatic nerve issue going up and down my leg). My bigger problem was putting I weight on over the break.

Every time I finish a 100 mile race, I take a little break. After a couple of weeks of running less, I develop this difficult-to-explain feeling down my left thigh. It is sort of numb, but sort of burning. It feels fine when I run, though. It is only after I stop. I can feel it when I run, but it doesn't have an impact on me continuing. In fact, it starts to loosen up pretty good after about 4 miles. So far, I have been able to stretch my piriformis muscle to solve it. It normally takes about a week to stretch it out. I think when I back off things tighten up a bit too much and cause the piriformis to press on the sciatic nerve. I have absolutely no idea what your situation is, but that is what causes my problems in that area.
