I had an interesting conversation with a friend that got me thinking. We were talking about running, and he asked me about my upcoming race. He seemed shocked that I've not run an "official" marathon yet. I didn't think it was that weird but I thought I'd throw the questions out there. Where did you start (distance wise) and where did you go? Trail or road, doesn't matter.
for me it was
5K
Quarter Marathon (that's what they called it, it was closer to 7 miles)
1/2 Marathon
10K
55K
my next race is a 50 miler in June.
For the record, I do want to run a marathon, however, I only want to run it when I feel I could do it fast (for me at least which is under 3:25).

In my adult years, it was
1/2 marathon
30k
50k
50M
and toeing the 100M in October.
I've never done a full marathon, and I'm not planning on running one in the near future.
There were a few small "races" (mainly FA runs) in between the distances mentioned above, but I don't consider those significant.
Run for fun.

All these were trails.
This year I'm planning on my first 50k in two weeks, although this may be in jeopardy due to a ankle sprain I suffered in the last 1/2 marathon. If I can't start, then my first Ultra will be a 100k that I'm signed up for this October. While it would be nice to have a shorter Ultra under my belt before the 100k, I'm not too concerned about the jump because I'll just put in a few 50k training runs.

Your friend is clearly an expert. I imagine he has a subscription to Runner's World?

The 1st 50k was two weeks before my only marathon, not a recommended strategy...

And now just back to trail marathons and 25k's
IMHO--Trail marathons are great. No need to get real anal about your training and you can bluff your way thru on a bad day.
Half marathon.
Marathon.
5k. (oh boy did that hurt)
More half marathons, more full marathons, more 5-10k's, 15k-25k trail races.

I will admit to a life as a road runner for 4-5 years, though I never wore arm panties.
My early running/racing years was focused on the BQ, marathon/half marathon PR's, and running trail races in the "off season".
In dog beers, I've only had one.
I like my arm panties.
Lace: Well, Mandy might claim that I have sported arm panties before but I swear those photos are doctored.
Do you ever roll down the arm panties or use them as emergency tp supply? I could see them coming in handy for that.

If I would have discovered trail races prior to my HM and marathons (2008 - 2010), I think I would have skipped the marathon. Not too many of that distance primarily on trail.
My favorite day of the week is RUNday

I remember that picture quite well and it looked legit.
I've never used them for that purpose. But if you look at my race pictures, I almost always have a pair of gloves on, even in the summer. In the winter, I wear two pairs. There's a very logical reason for that and I have had to ditch the occasional glove during times of distress.

I haven't done a marathon either. I would like to do a road marathon and qualify for Boston at some point in my career. For me, this puts a lot of pressure on me to be super prepared and super trained which makes it less appealing. I'll get there eventually, but no rush.
