Short Week Wednesdaily (Read 22 times)

Tim

I'm all thrown off with the short week and a vacation coming up.

Hot run at lunch if I have time after running errands and getting a hair cut.  Distance TBD.

QOTD:  Bert made me think of this.  Do you ever grab anything that you see growing to eat on your run?  I'm in apple country,so I'll grab an apple along the way, and have also had blueberries and black berries when they are growing wild.  Always a nice boost of energy.  I have no idea what an edible mushroom vs a non-edible mushroom looks like, but I see them all the time and wish I knew because I'd bring some home with me (any mushroom hunters out there?)

    “Paralysis-to-50k” training plan is underway!

I held off another day. That crack/cut on the side of my right foot was causing me some issues. I doctored on it, and it seems fine today. I'll catch up tomorrow since I took off from work. I was hoping we would miss a day for the storm, but it barely did anything here. I am not complaining, though.

QOTD: I usually munch on poison ivy. Other than that, I don't grab anything growing. Haha. No. I have eaten black berries, dew berries, and huckleberries. I don't trust my understanding of mushrooms enough to chance it. We do have chanterelle mushrooms around here. I have a friend whose property runs all the way down into the Tickfaw River swamp that is just crazy with chanterelles. Those are pretty obvious, but I have never eaten them.

I thought for sure someone would be calling today the HUMPdaily after Queen's penis rock picture yesterday!!!  But anyways...

A hot 5 miles last night.  Sucked.  Hate, hate, hate the humidity.  Better times are coming though.  Not sure if I will run tonight or get up early tomorrow and run a little longer.  Leaning towards the latter at this point.

Queen - so what's the plan for the next 2+ weeks? Are you in taper mode? Are you freaked out yet?

Good to see James popping in yesterday!

Those of you going to the trailer trash rendezvous this weekend, I suppose you will be off the grid for a bit.  Make sure you bring back lots of stories and pictures.

QOTD: No.  Not sure I ever have done that.

        Have a great hump day!

My favorite day of the week is RUNday

Well is Warden had gotten up earlier, I'm sure he would have.

Forgot to mention that I broke my middle toe (proximal phalanx) on my left foot when I kicked a hidden rock while in NC.  It was a section overgrown with grass and weeds and never saw the little bugger.  Kicked it pretty hard.  Really only bothers me when I try to walk barefoot.  It's been years since I kicked anything that caused lasting injury.

AT - Haircut?  Have big plans coming up or something?

LB2 - Glad to hear the storm wasn't so bad.

Dr. Jamie - I'm with you on the weather.  I did 4+ last night and it was absolutely miserable.

Hoping for a bit cooler (as in mid-80's) temps today.  Probably try for 7 after work.

QOTD:  Aside from apples, if I see any wild raspberries or blackberries, I will definitely munch on those.  There are tons of mushrooms in the woods this year and in our cabin yard, but like others, I don't know which will be tasty and which will kill me, so I leave them alone.  Some can be very pretty to look at though, which are probably the deadly ones.

            3/17 - NYC Half

4/28 - Big Sur Marathon  DNS

            6/29 - Forbidden Forest 30 Hour

8/29 - A Race for the Ages - will be given 47 hours

Morning all. Just returned from a steamy 4 miles with a running friend. slow and easy was the theme. yesterday ended up being a short jaunt around the neighborhood once the sunset and the temps dropped to 80. Looking ahead, I think we have much cooler temps coming, especially nice for Sunday's HM. Might not get out of the 60s.

qotd: usually raspberries and blackberries, but don't come across those very often. The wild blueberries I find running are the best, but those are usually runs limited to MN, WI and NH so it doesn't happen very often. I found chanterelles once, but I didn't pick them (nothing to put them into). And of course, that was 20 years ago and it hasn't happened again.

Snow in the high country overnight and where I’m camped it’s 41F with a light drizzle. Heavier rain is forecast for this afternoon. Hope that doesn’t mean heavy snow higher up. I’m camped at around 10k.  Summited Elbert yesterday with a little snow and sleet on top. Doing a little better with the altitude but still concerned about my 50k on Saturday.

On on the scoreboard after 2 days out here-2 14ers summited, 17 trail miles, and 2 brewpubs!

                QOTD-only raspberries and blackberries.

Another TURD for me, the knee is feeling better, but I'm going to take a few more days off to make sure it's back to "normal" before I start up again. This is just so weird, I felt fine for my b2b 20s on Sat and Sun, went to bed on Sun night feeling fine and then woke up Monday morning with a really bad case of "runner's knee".  I must have been doing something in my sleep Sunday night. (My DW assured me there was nothing going on...     unfortunately.)

                  qotd: just spiders and flies.

Short week here too as I am taking 1/2 day off tomorrow and Friday off as well.

Running. I will do some of that this evening. I did get in 6 last night on the local trail. Was a bit behind my normal time but held it together and finished in about the same time as normal for me these days. Well, off about 20 seconds but close enough given the sweltering conditions.

QOTD: Not too often. Raspberries sometimes but often the wild ones are too seedy for my taste.

                    Thread killer ..

I was unsuccessful on my self-supported 50k over the weekend . I did manage 21 by not going near my house and staying out in the desert . I was okay with it . One of these days I'll be able to actually do it,  I seem to always top out in the 20's when running from home . We went up high on Sunday on the PCT near Sonora Pass and then down to the PCT/TRT on Monday near Carson Pass . I can't seem to post pictures here anymore , it was very pretty .

QOTD: Not much to eat out in the desert .

Ran 9 with the trail group this morning.  this trail is pretty flat and along an open canal for water so Jack can make it.  Although very pooped at the end.  I have Earl pulling the leash up front and Jack dragging behind.  I jokingly say my anchor just crabbed when he slows too much.

When I stepped outside you can smell the smoke of a new fire closer.   We are going on about 2 months of smoke (at least not a close fire).  I currently have a smokers cough.

QOTD:  Yes, black berries, plums, cherries...the only mushroom I know is the Morel.  Eat the blackberries on the lower part of the bush, they have electrolytes!

Jamie:  Plan!   Plan!  I am suppose to have a plan!  I was thinking 20 long run this weekend but on a totally runnable trail as the rae is pegged as runnable...except the walking parts   Freaked out, yes I am freaked out.  I was going to get back to my mediation practices so I can stay in the movement.  I am just going to focus on the fact that I will be out there 28 hours no matter what so don't rush anything.    I am going to map out the course, distance and try to figure out what time I will be a drop bag locations and what needs to be in them??  My last 50, I dropped a bag but totally forgot about it.  The main thing is warm clothes and flash lights.  Well that might of been more than you were asking.

AT:  Did you kick something or you giving someone the middle toe...hmm is that the same as the finger?

Berto:  Yes he's heading out for a bromance with some other dudes...and his wife.

Queenie - excited for you! If your race is in 2 weeks or less, it's pretty much taper time now. Stay fresh, and don't overdue it. Good idea to start planning the run and estimated times. Always be conservative on timing for the drop bag that contains your night stuff. Always better to have that one aid station sooner than one later obviously.

In dog beers, I've only had one.

Jamie:  Plan!   Plan!  I am suppose to have a plan!

Two things in addition to planning our your drop bags:

                            (a) Carry spare batteries for the nighttime parts. Don't let something that costs less than $5 and is really light weight sink your run.

                            (b) Eat. Keep a slow and steady intake of calories the whole way. Bland stuff like potato soup, mashed potatoes, rice, animal crackers, ginger snaps, etc are the best. (Bonus, also carry Tums.)

All the rest such as;  keep moving, eat while walking, don't stay too long in aid stations, beware the chair, prepare drop bag stuff for hot/cold temps, don't fight the afternoon heat, stay on trail, don't give up, etc. are all the things you know and do all the time anyway so don't worry about that easy stuff.

This is going to be fun.....

                            Faster Than Your Couch!

                              Good Morning, well, Afternoon!

Short run later in the afternoon planned, hopefully with DS joining me on his bike. It's nice and hot, just as I like it, but the humidity sure is a killer. I went for a walk yesterday and crashed on the swing on the patio afterwards. May have been due to lack of sleep, too, but it was bad.

Sandy: I had an eerie creepy crawlers encounter yesterday: I was sitting on my couch in the evening, after sunset, but the sky still fairly light. I noticed a big spider on the screen of the sliding door. I kept watching it from inside as a black shadow against the light sky for about 15 minutes, making sure it wouldn't get inside somehow. Suddenly, with a scratching noise, a huge praying mantis shot up from the ground, crawling on the screen, going for the spider. It covered the 4 feet from the ground to where the spider was in a split second, but eventually missed the spider just by a tad. Then I had the 7-inch praying mantis sitting on the screen, and I kept watching it, as a dark shadow against the light sky. Creepy!

Queen: I agree with XT, keep the drop bags well stocked with supplies early on, to stay on the safe side. I was glad when I had decided to pick up my lights early at ES100, as the section between late afternoon and night took longer than expected, and I would have been bummed without the lights.

AT: Best wishes for a quick healing of the toe!

QOTD: Raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, apples, huckleberries, and wild strawberries in Austria. I always enjoy it when I find something for a quick impromptu snack along the trail.

                              Run for fun.

                              flashlight and sidewalk

I ran 3 miles last night...the first one easy, the second 2 at what I hope will be 1/2 marathon pace.  I am doing a 1/2 this weekend as a tune up for NYC marathon, so pretty much taper mode.

QOTD: Wine berries will stop me in my tracks.  I know a few spots where many grow.  We used to fill a bucket when we were kids and my neighbors mom would make ice-cream with it.
