Anyone know what DEET (and similar chemicals) actually does to the mosquito, or ticks?
How does it work to prevent bites? Kill the insects, or make it somehow impossible for them to bite (how)?
If it kills them, does it end up in the food chain (e.g. for birds), or in the soil from dead insects?
I was wondering about this today on my run.
Run for fun.

I never gave it much thought....

There is a site that might answer some of your questions. I use the Permethrin for ticks and the DEET for the skeeters and other bugs. Doesn't seem to help with deer flies. I'll get bit some, haven't had a tick on myself in three years. Luck or Permethrin? Don't know.
As far as the chemicals ending up in the food chain and any effects they have on other life is a good question. I'll do a little more research later if I have the time.
I have heard that rubbing down in used motor oil will keep the horse flies and deer flies at bay.
Good stuff, I enjoyed reading. Thanks!
