Feelin' bad Fridaily (Read 38 times)

I have yet to run since Stone Mill on Saturday - moreso because I have been sick the last few days.  I think that the race affected my immune system a bit.   I was actually feeling a bit down the day before the race but it didn't seem to affect me on race day.  No need to push things so I will just take it easy another few days.

QOTD: What do yo do to deal with sickness? either preventative measures or during?

I try to take extra vitamin "C".  Otherwise running has been the best thing for me for the last 5+ years to keep me from getting sick as often as I used to.  Extra sleep during of course is always good.

    Have a great day!

Good morning boyjame, I think we did a simultaneous post....  ;-)

The thunder clouds are so thick here at the moment that the streetlights are on, and it’s mid-morning.  We have a monster cold front coming thru and we’re supposed to drop 50 deg today.  That’ll be nice once it’s thru.  But that also explains why a bunch of folks here at work are out sick, crazy TX weather I guess.

I got up early and did a 3 mi “instant run” before the front came thru.  I’m also fighting the sickness but I think my running thru it helps.

qotd:  See above.  Hot tea also helps a little.

2/17/24 - Forgotten Florida 100 Mile, Christmas, FL

We missed two days of running because we were on the road, but did squeeze in a couple walks/hikes along the way.  Got a nice 5 mile run in this morning though.

QOTD: Not much other than to try to stay healthy and to tough it out when that fails.

          Rest day.

QOTD: Blackberry brandy cures all. My immune system has kicked into over drive sense I started running. I can only remember being sick once (knocks on wood) in the last four years and it didn't last very long. In my days before running even if I saw someone sick I would catch it, seems like I was sick 4 or 5 times every year.

          Occasional Runner

Jo and I had a really nice run in the mountains this morning. I've been in a running funk all week and I think this run will pull me out of it. We did 6 hilly miles. I ran into three mule deer on the trail, a young buck and his bitches.

QOTD: I have a trick that works for me. The day before I run an ultra, I take a triple dose of my multivitamin and then I do it again right after I finish running. I also attribute my recovery time to this, at least partially. I think vitamin depletion is totally overlooked in most recovery regimens.

SRD for me today. I'm back up to 40 miles a week but feel like I've put on a

few pounds, must be a winter thing.

QOTD: I was in my 40's before I realized extra rest helps, I'm a slow learner.
I dose extra C and rest when I get something now. I'm still figuring out the
preventative side, but I think a healthy immune system needs something to
fight to stay healthy, so I don't do anything extreme.

What type of multivitamin do you use? I take a multivitamin every morning (not sure the brand) but I never thought about taking multiple doses.  I have considered taking more vitamin C after a race (read that somewhere - basically for the same reason you are giving).

Morning!  Got a short, slow run on the trails this am.  Good to be back on dirt!  Also had a pileated woodpecker fly very close and low in front of me.  Always love seeing those birds (and they are not an everyday sighting here).  Now, I'm working on some bread.

QOTD:  Oh, I have distinct phases.... denial, anger and then finally acceptance, then sleep.  Sometimes the denial phase involves placebos, but I don't think any of it really works* other than rest, water and healthy foods (for the common stuff).   I really despise getting sick, and thankfully, it doesn't happen often.

                  * Please note:   I'm also not running ultras where I am putting the body and immune system under significant stress.  I'm talking the normal everyday running for me.

                  Have a good friday, folks!

I use Centrum Specialist because it has a lot of iron. Most multi's don't have any iron and I think it's a hidden key to recovery. Ultra running can induce temporary anemia, which can drag you down if you don't turn it around. Walgreens has a generic multi that is very similar too and I'll sometimes buy it to save a couple dollars.

Taking C is better than nothing, but if you're going to pop a pill, why not use one that will replenish everything you depleted?

I sincerely believe this is a cornerstone to my recovery routine. But don't tell anybody.

Doing weight interval training today (lunge walks, box jumps, etc, etc).

QOTD: Sleep more. And one other trick that works for me: when my throat starts to feel infected (raw, mucus, etc), I gargle with salty water. Very salty water. That seems to kill whatever is going on in there about half the time. It also relieves the itching.

EDIT: Oh, and I've stopped pretending that whiskey or brandy or cognac will help. I just sleep worse if I drink anything when I'm getting sick.

                        Morning!

Got in 45 mins on the elliptical last night plus core work. I haven't attempted to run either, boyjame. I haven't been sick, just promised myself I would take a week off. I will probably run this Sat or Sun.  Taking another rest day today.

QOTD: I don't get sick often (knock on wood) but I have used Zicam when I felt something coming on, and it's worked at least once. I also drink a lot of water and take Nyquil to sleep.

Oh,  I also drink hot toddys.  They seem to work at least temporarily Wink

I have my stuff and may do a noon 5 or after work 5 or just blow it all off.

QOTD:  I do not get sick that often so I really do nothing to prevent it and then when I am sick I usualy just wait it out.  Not big into pills and such.  Oh but the hubby swears by nose flushing...but then again he gets a lot of colds.

Hello trailers.  I got in a nice 5 miles run with my dog yesterday on the river front trial.  It was so cold out!  My lungs were freezing!  I'm not quite used to these winter temperatures yet.

QOTD:  I just deal with it.  I am, however, a firm believer in the power of a pot of homemade chicken soup as well as increased sleep if you are not feeling well.

QOTD: Preventative: flu shot, multivitamins + vitamin C, allergy meds (to prevent post nasal drip from making an environment suitable for germs, or so my Dr. said)  During:  Sleep, theraflu, nyquil/dayquil.
