There is a doctor here in CA who publishes a lot of research on ultra runners. I found the above slideshow with graphs to be pretty interesting.

Some interesting stuff.  I fit well into the age category of first ultra and was a little higher with years running before first ultra..  It would be interesting to see what the average age of first marathon is to see if there is a natural progression.

I was a bit surprised to see 25% of first time ultra runners have been running less than 3 years.

Now this makes me feel old...

By the time I'll fit into the median range of having run ultramarathons for 6 years, I'll probably feel even older (at least, I'll be even older). And my previous running experience of a mere 35 years before running my first ultra makes me seem like a - dinosaur.

        Run for fun.

Me too! I liked the last question of this year's survey (they send them out every two years):

If you became convinced that running ultras is bad for your health, would you still do it?

Evidently I'm a late bloomer and also fall in the less than 3 year mark of running experience. The average annual mileage is a wee bit higher than mine, but not by much.

                Interesting stuff Smile

                Are we there, yet?

I'm an outlier in almost every category, but that doesn't really surprise me.

I do find that I'm now more prone to lung ailments, mostly in the winter- don't think it's asthma, but maybe it is??????????

My doc seems to diagnose almost any recurring lung ailment as asthma. Not sure he's right, but the medicine he gives me works :-) I only take it when I've had a cold and my lungs take a few weeks to recover.
