Havasu Fall resides on the Hualapai Reservation in northwest AZ about a 4 hour drive from Phoenix.  Multi-day permits are required for backpacking the 25sih miles round trip to the falls.  For the past 2 years I have called on February 1st, when permits open for the year, but I never succeeded in obtaining a permit.  Day hiking is "forbidden" but a friend had told me she and a small group had done so in June; just expect to pay a little more for a day use permit ($86 per person).  Worth every penny.

Havasu Falls is actually a series of falls along the Havasu Creek.  Thee are 4 primary falls within a couple of miles of each other and additional falls another 3 miles further.  With our limited time frame we knew he'd only be able to see the 4 primary ones: Navajo Falls, Fifty Foot Falls, Havasu Falls, and Mooney Falls.  Needless to say I'm going to continue to try and get a backpacking permit for this stunningly beautiful place.

          Navajo Falls

Our first look at Havasu Falls, about a hundred foot drop

          From a distance

At the top of Mooney Falls, about a 200 foot drop.

And the only way to get to the bottom of Mooney Falls.

The water really is turquoise due to mineral deposits.

yes, those are people for some perspective.

Beautiful. My brother got to hike there a few years ago. They got their permit on the first try, and he had no idea how lucky he was until he started talking to people who had tied and tried.

            “Paralysis-to-50k” training plan is underway!

I've heard some potentially disturbing things about the permit system: preference is giving to large corporations, tour companies, and out of state visitors all in the name to drive tourism dollars. I'm not sure how true this is.

                    For September here's my suggestion:

1.) Run consistently - doesn't matter the mileage

2.) Get a picture of wildlife on a run (and share it)

3.) Get a picture of a good vista on a run (and share it)

4.) Run with a buddy or someone new (at least once)

5.) Get in at least one Long Run (whatever distance that means for you)

6.) Trip/fall less than 3 times during the month

7.) Try a new route or trail

8.) Try a new food (ok not running related but still fun)

9.) Consider what races/adventures you might want for 2017

10.) and most important...don't F things up by getting injured!!!!!

                    1) Goal. was 225 for the month and depending if a do 10 tomorrow I will hit that.

Weekly: 44, 58, 70, 43 (the 70 week was an anomoly because I shifted my long run from Sunday to Monday.

                    2) Done

                    3) Heh, I've had quite a few of these.

                    4) Done

                    5) 33 in the GC, 27 to Havasu Falls

                    6) Trips/falls = 0 (I think this is my most proud accomplishment).  But I did take some trips to see quite a few falls.  Smile

                    7) Havasu Falls, Devils Bridge Trail, Upper Ribbon Falls and Upper Upper Ribbon Falls

                    8) I don't remember trying any new foods (well except for my buddies snack bars he makes and they were delicious).  But I did try a new burger joint in Flagstaff that was fantabulous.

                    9) Still looking at R2R2R again in spring.  I think this will be my last one though.  I couldn't ever tire of the GC; there's just too many other cool things to do and places to go. I think I'm going to get off of the corridor trails and visit some of the much less seen GC sites.

                    10) So far so good.  Thought I admit I had a phantom pain in my foot last night at the track workout.

OH, And what will the October challenge bring?

                      1.  No.

                      2.  No.

                      3.  No.

                      4.  I did this!  I ran with various different friends during my 24 hour.

                      5.  I suppose a run/walk counts, eh?

                      6.  Can't fall if you don't trail run, right?

                      7.  No.

                      8.  Ummmm, I don't think so?

                      9.  I can't even plan for next month.

                      10.  Still injured.

                      In conclusion, September was dumb.

                      Running is dumb.

                        Here's my report card.

1.) Decent runs leading up to my race next week.

2.) This is about all I see now (not my photo).

3.) How's this for a suburban forest landscape?

4.) Ran with some new "running buddies" when I came back to the US.

                        5.) Some b2b 20s.

6.) No trips yet, but there is still a half a day left.

7.) Ran a new trail with my DD at one of her horse rides in central TX.

8.) Does a new brand of taco mix count?

9.) Trying to get back into Hardrock.

10.) I did that a month or so ago, don't need to do it again anytime soon.

                          1) Yes.  Even with the ankle injury I was fairly consistent.

                          2). No.  No wildlife pictures.

3). Yes. See Boulder Beast RR

4). Yes. If you count running with people at the race.

5). Yes.  Before the ankle injury I had one run over 17 miles than the BB.

6). Yes. Only fell once, but injured the ankle.

7). Yes. There were a couple of new trails at the BB.

8). Maybe. I had Oysters Rockefeller while on vacation. I've had Oysters before, but never Rockefeller.

9). It's going to snow in Southern Maryland in Feb. Why? I'm planning on doing the Frozen Heart down there on 2/18. Last time I registered for it they got 8-10 inches of snow . Also looking at doing Mile Run 1/2, Montour 12 hr, Delaware Triple Crown and some other stuff later in the year.

10). NO. I totally F'd things up by getting hurt. Started the month a little sore. Ending it a little sorer, but it could be worse I suppose cause at least I can run on my ankle.

                            For September here's my suggestion:

1.) Run consistently - doesn't matter the mileage  I think I ran pretty consistently even when I was dealing with Jack's shit.

2.) Get a picture of wildlife on a run (and share it) Saw many more deer than normal and one large group but never got a picture.

3.) Get a picture of a good vista on a run (and share it) Running Sugar Bowl Ski Resort to Squaw Valley.

4.) Run with a buddy or someone new (at least once) Ran with the group on Sunday and there was one new guy that I never ran with.  Jordan, the guy behind the green guy..looking at the picture I never ran with the lady on the end.

                            Expand

5.) Get in at least one Long Run (whatever distance that means for you) Ran 18 miles 09/04 and 18 miles 09/10

6.) Trip/fall less than 3 times during the month No falls

7.) Try a new route or trail I ran 2 routes that were not new but I went further on them then ever before.  The Sugar Bowl to Sqauw I have run 10 miles down and then turned around but this time went the full 18 miles so 8 new miles.  I also did a point to point that I have run 11 down but finally saw the next 7 miles.

8.) Try a new food (ok not running related but still fun)  I think I failed this one.

9.) Consider what races/adventures you might want for 2017I set my Calendar to register for lottery  Nut 100K and Gorge Waterfalls 100K

10.) and most important...don't F things up by getting injured!!!!!  My major fuck up was taking Jack to have his nuts removed and instead had his prostate and arthera fucked!!

No scenic pictures. Ate at a new restaurant and had a new combination of pasta and sauce. Otherwise met the criteria minimally. Ran with lots of new people at NC 24 and also some of the freshman at Immaculata U where I do most of my training.
