I did nothing but sleep in today (which really was only 7:30am).  But it's a beautiful morning.  Wish I could get out for a run.  Too many other things going on including my last day at my current position at work!! I transition on Monday to a new position.

QOTD: Have you ever made major decisions on chaging jobs/careers? Or have you thought about it?

I am currently in school, looking to stay in the same field (Psychology) but change my path for the rest of my career - hopefully to be able to teach full time at the undergrad and grad levels and then maybe have my own counseling business on the side, write books, become rich.  (ok maybe not the last one but...)

Have a great weekend! (anyone racing??)

My favorite day of the week is RUNday

Got in another 5.5 to 6.5 miles on the trails here at Branson. I've often wanted to buy a GPS to track my runs. Yesterday my phone showed 6.1 miles for the trail section that we did. Today I went slightly farther and it only showed 5.41 miles. Now I remember why I don't spend the money on a GPS unit.  Temp was about 70 but it was dripping rain so not real pleasant to run in.

Jame:  I hope things go well as you transition to your new job.

QOTD: First time was when I sold my small trucking business to go back to school. Some times I regret it, but I like what I do and I was able to spend a lot of time with the kiddos while they were growing up. Right now I'm going back to school again. It's a major commitment, that for the next three years will impact my ability to travel, run and bike like I would like to. Hopefully it will provide me with more options as I get older.  I'll still be in the medical field, just switching disciplines.

        Afternoon trailers,

I got in a pleasant 9 at palisades park after work yesterday.  I must have been running pretty quietly because I ran up on a 6 point buck still in velvet.  He didn't frighten off and we both just stood there looking at each other for a few minutes.  I heard some rustling back down the trail and a doe came walking out.  The look the buck gave the doe was priceless (I read it as "what the fuck is wrong with you") and she ran off.

Qotd: the last job I worked I was a construction generalist...meaning I did a lot of different things (supervise, repair concrete, fix lights, toilets, weld, chip, estimate, negotiate...lots).  When I hit the job market I found that it was difficult to find work as a nonspecialist (also difficult to describe what I could do). Eventually, the company I'm with now brought me in as a safety guy then bumped me up to their corporate safety manager.  All in all, a pretty substantial change in career paths, but a good one (safety is a very job secure occupation).

TGIF.  Tomorrow am we are heading to the beach for a week, so I got out for a short one this morning.   I usually break a lot of spider webs on my morning run, but today I almost ran into 10-12 silk worms that were hanging about chest height in the middle of the trail.  Looked like a mini Cirque du Soleil performance.  Never seen so many in one pace before, so that was pretty neat.

QOTD:  Unfortunately, most of us in health care would love to move on to something new.  I was approached by an insurance company last year wanting me to do review work for them.  I just could not go over the the "dark side", so i turned it down.

          “Paralysis-to-50k” training plan is underway!

Afternoon all. This is week one without running. Doc. strongly advised me to take at least two weeks off. I start PT on Monday. Nothing serious like a stress fracture but my PF and ITB are shot. I have Oil Creek 100 in October so this is killing my training but it will be alright. Don't worry...be happy...right?

boyjame: I wish I could sleep in. I travel an hour for work so I'm up at 4 every morning. Blah!

DD1: ha...GPS. I hate when that crap happens. Great run though. I wish I could get out there.

            Jamezilla: Nice run. Silly animals.

qotd: I think about it every-single-day. No action though. I'll take a winning powerball ticket any day so I can just run for the rest of my life.

SRD before a long run in Desolation Wilderness tomorrow. Feet feel a bit iffy and there will be thunderstorms in the morning, but I'm going for it.

QOTD: Many times. I was set on a military career, then became an engineer, discarded that for management consulting. Got tired of that and moved into business/marketing in semiconductors. Realized that's an awful industry and moved into Cloud stuff a few years back.

Depending on the perspective, I'm either broad of unfocused :-). It is clear that you lose a lot every time you switch though: network, industry-specific knowledge, etc, etc.

              Thread killer ..

They might not be as bad tomorrow . Wish I wasn't lame and could come up , I'm giving my ankle another week . If you do another run up there before it snows we'll come up .

One of local runing stars,  Jenny Capel,  is going out this weekend to beat the women's TRT record ( 165 miles ). She is a super nice person and a talented runner . The current record is 55 hours .

Happy Friday.  Where's that pie?  Rest day for me-- more time in the pool after work.  A big fire just started yesterday a few miles outside of town & it grew to over 1,000 acres in one afternoon.  I think this weekend's long run may be a bit chaffing for my lungs. Ack.

QOTD:  When I graduated from college, I had $5 and my student work-study job had ended due to finishing school.  The $5 was enough to get a subway ticket downtown for some interviews.  I took the only position that was offered: a librarian in a law firm.  It paid well, but after a year there I got really tired of the city (SF) and used all of my vacation & savings to travel around the country by train for a month.  I spent a night in East Glacier, MT, and I fell in love with the wildness of the place.  After returning home, I talked my SO into moving to MT.  We both quit our jobs & drove here with our cats in the back seat & our goldfish in a thermos to start anew in a place where we knew no one and had no jobs.  I eventually started working for the city prosecutor.  After 5 years there, I told them to shove it and left behind the fat government benefits & holidays for a job with a private firm.  I love it here.

You are doing the right thing. I'm hoping to get September and October weekends in as well, so hopefully we can link up then.

                      Nothing today. Rest.

QOTD: I left a high school teaching job to work in a chemical plant. Then, I left that job to work at a technical college, which was a good move, but the money isn't great. I have enough years here now that I probably wouldn't leave unless the money was great. I did apply for a job with IBM and had a phone interview set up only to learn that they had two transfer requests come in before the cutoff. Transfers get priority. I am glad it didn't work out because I really have a great deal of time invested here for my retirement. I will probably always work somewhere, but I may choose to do something with less responsibility once I reach my retirement time.

Sugnim, that's an awesome story! We rented a cabin by the Gallatin river last summer, and I loved it there. Still can't understand how you could leave SF though ;-)  I moved halfway across the world to be here :-)

                          Good Morning,

Still on BIRD, but it seems to be coming to an end soon. I feel so much better today, so I'll give it a few more days, then I'll head out again. The forced rest sucks, but I'll stick with it. Better be safe.

Beautiful day, though, sigh. I'll just shave my cats instead. Clown

QOTD: Most of my major career decisions were the "natural" development of my jobs, so there were not many steps which were actually initiated by myself.

That said, the decision to stay in America when my company moved back to Austria was my own initiative, against what was expected of me. I had a job offer in Austria, and I also already had a confirmed job (for life) in Germany on my hands, too, but I declined both. No regrets.

I gave up a job (which was good pay, great benefits, lots of flexibility and secure for life) in Germany to move back to Austria, because I thought I needed to connect to my roots. Not the best decision, but nothing was really wrong with it, either. It led me to moving to America, so it was a good move, I guess. I would have been happy in Germany, too, I think.

And I made the decision to become a stay-at-home mom (read: part of the inventory of the house) with my youngest kids. This probably had the most profound effect on my life, many things changed. No regrets here, too, I just wished we had had more money. Black eye

Now I'm back at work (not in my profession, just an instant-money job, but it's a job, and I'm still looking to get back into my field of expertise), and I have not regretted this move at all.

All in all, I think career decisions are more about your general attitude towards change, and what you make out of a change, or an opportunity, less about a "right" or "wrong" move.

                          Run for fun.

SRD today, but after work I did go to the gym and did the stair-climber torture machine for 200 floors.

qotd: I've been with the same company for 34 years now...  yikes!!!  But I do really like what I do.  Although I didn't change companies I have had to make a few interesting decisions, like live in Korea for 5 years, more to Texas, etc, etc.  My current long-term project is going to end in about 6 months and they are already talking about sending me back overseas somewhere...  that will be fun.
