running under the BigSky

Tiny Elvis and I got in 4 miles yesterday evening; including a pic that shows the drastic difference in a south facing slope (on the left) and a north facing slope (right)- almost no snow to almost a foot of snow!  Tiny E doesn’t mind the snow

    Something similar this evening.

qotd: Easter plans?  Nothing much here, sounds like a ham supper on Sunday- will get a few miles and hit the gym to make room

I ran an easy 3.3 miles around the neighborhood last night.  I need to do more of that.  Getting back to how I started running in the first place...10 years ago.  Shit, I'm getting old.

Awwww, Tiny E looks so happy at the lack of snow.  We must be kindred spirits.

QOTD: Nothing.  The climbing gym is closed, so we'll shift our normal Sunday morning climbing to Saturday evening instead.  Hopefully going for a trail run.  Need to start packing for vacation - we leave in a week!

      Running is dumb.

Got in 5 miles yesterday along the charleston waterfront. Then lots of walking. Now at our oceanfront beach condo. Did a few miles this morning along the bike path, during which I ran into friends. From MD. We're in a quiet, out of the way area so I did a double take. Once the rain stops, we're heading to the state park and I'll check out the trails there.

qotd: driving back home. Not looking forward to the traffic

warden - Great pic of Tiny E!  Promising sight of the south side slopes.  And yeah, I think we can exclude Casino Royale (forgot about that disturbing scene).

Mandy - Get those easy neighborhood runs in.  They're bread and butter runs in my book.

runtraildc - When does the ocean get warm enough to frolic in the waves down there?

After a 10 day streak, it's a rest day for me.

QOTD:  No plans, as DW is out of town and I'm baching it with the dog and cat.  A couple long runs, but we'll see if any unplanned surprises pop up.

7 miles with the running group this morning..4 dogs..

QOTD:  Nothing...actually we have nothing planned for the weekend at all.

QOTD2:  You think a 15 miler one day and another 15 the next day are equal to a long run of 26 miles in one day?  If your answer is yes..than how about 15 one day and 11 the next, equal to 26?

warden:  great picture of Tiny in mid air  pretty sure he could clear a pine cone.

              15 + 15 = 26, Yes

              15 + 11 = 26, No

I've been doing weird back-to-back LR combos lately (maybe I'm just doubly weird)....

              20 + 20

              13 + 21

              18 + 22.4

              17 + 24.3

Mentally though, I think I'd rather do 20 + 20 in two days than 30 in one day.

Yes I was reading about a guy who was training for a 100.  After 2 hours of running he got bored and hated it.  So his theory was to break it up 2 hours on Sat and 3 hours on Sunday.

He must LOVE races then.   Honestly though, I'm so new to this ultra business that I'm the last person who should be talking about training.

                    No to both questions.

I think you can get away with shorter long runs if you're a more experienced ultra runner.  If you already know how your body reacts to running for 8-15 hours.  What you can eat, what you can't eat, if you're going to chafe, what it feels like to have your feet pound on the ground for that long.  My longest training run for my first 50K was 25 miles.  My longest training run for a 50/100K was 30 miles, but I had run a bunch of 50Ks before that.  I think for a 100 you'd better be an experienced ultra person, or be willing to put in long training runs.  Not sure why anyone wants to run a 100 if they get bored after 2 hours though!

My calf is starting to come around somewhat so I picked up the pace and turnover today after 3 weeks of just slogging about. Still cautious on the vertical but no setbacks as I did 10.5 hilly miles this morning. 25k next Saturday and I think I'll just have to approach it as a up tempo longer supported training run. I'll see how it goes early on but I don't think I should sell out so to speak.

QOTD 1--No plans of any significance. Early technical trail run while the ground is still froze.

QOTD--Generally agree with Mandy. Doing back to back longer runs are fine but IMO still no substitute for the extended long run. I've always been an advocate of specific quality miles as opposed to just a high number of miles.

Amazing, we had real spring weather last night. Temp about 68 when I hit the trails at Green Lane. Managed to complete one of my regular 7 mile evening loops with the Lady without taking an eternity. It was at my slow time for the loop but that's an improvement. Various levels of mud and muck out there but for the most part not too bad. On and off rain today, not as warm, but at least it does not feel like winter. Plan is for 5 or 6 later after work.

QOTD: No plans here. Stuck in on-call jail but typically not much happens. Will get a few short runs in I suppose. Maybe even start on weeding some of flower beds.

QOTD2: No and no. Anyone in decent ultra/long run shape can run 15 miles without much planning. Even if it is b2b. 26 or 30 is a different matter. More concerns with fueling and fatigue in a single long run.

In dog beers, I've only had one.

qotd 2: I don’t think they are equal, but I do think that back to back mid to longer runs are a really good training idea.  The bottom line is you’re going to be running on fatigued legs on day two and there are a lot of advantageous physiological adaptations taking place.

Likely more important, if I want to stay married, chunking out 5-7 hours on a weekend day is probably not helpful.  I can get up early to squeeze in 3-4 hours and still make it in time for brunch.  Death at the hands of a race is better than death at the hands of the wife, IMO.
