this is a new one for me; went for a 6-ish mile run in beautiful southern GA (attending training) and got what I thought was a slight achilles strain, slowed down and eventually starting walking- pain was now in my heel.  Pain continued to increase to the point I was visibly limping.  Got back to the dorm and could barely walk, when I took weight off of it wasn't too bad.  Was hoping this morning it would be gone, no such luck-  it's worse- pain is brutal w/ any weight on the heel, so I was forced to limp my way around three airports on the way home- I really wanted a wheelchair, but opted to limp.

I'll go into urgent care tomorrow where they can hopefully make some diagnosis, but I'd like to get to a specialist if possible.  Better to go to a podiatrist?  sports medicine?  other?

These is some swelling, but not excessive- doesn't appear to be bruising, pain is not bad w/ no weight on the heel- through the roof if any weight so ever is put on it.

    TIA for any suggestions.

Tap the heel on every side to see if it reproduces any pain.  If it does, could be a stress fracture.  If it doesn't palpate around the heel to see where the pain is originating from.  Does heel hurt with foot movement while not weigh bearing?

      “Paralysis-to-50k” training plan is underway!

Sounds a little bit like when my wife tore her achilles tendon most of the way from her heel.  I hope it isn't that because it was surgery and a long painful recovery.  My best wishes go out to you for a speedy recovery.

I don't have any help for you just a weird related story. A friend of mine was complaining about heel pain when he walked, we were working on his house and the whole morning he complained of heel pain as he limped around. Finally he had enough and we sat down for lunch and I noticed the head of a nail in the bottom of his shoe. The whole morning he was walking on this nail and had a bunch of little pierce marks in his heel.

          Heal fast.

thanks folks!  I'll head into the doc this morning

it's definitely from the center of the heel inward, the outer heel doesn't hurt- tapping around the heel isn't too bad (maybe I wasn't tapping hard enough?); palpitating the area I can localize where the pain is- but now where near the pain as when I stand

as an added benefit, my lower back is thrown out I"m sure from trying to favor the foot while limping around Smile

I'd guess it's the Achilles tendon

Maybe pain from a heel spur? These usually don't cause symptoms, but when overloaded, they may cause some pain.

I hope it's not too serious, good luck!

              Run for fun.

              Thread killer ..

I had terrible pain in my heel a few years ago . Thought it was a stress fracture, I was running on sidewalks near my office . I went and had an x-ray it was a  bone spur,  pointing from my heel to my toes parallel to the ground . I quit running on sidewalks and haven't had a problem with it since .

Hope your pain is as easy to fix

Thanks for the encouraging words everyone!  Went to the doc today, they took an xray but couldn't see anything  Was told that stress fractures are tough to pickup-often they can be seen a couple of weeks later when they begin to heal

So..... it's rest, ice, ibuprofen-repeat for awhile

All the orthos in my area have stopped prescribing ibuprofen for any fracture, even for suspected stress fractures, as it seems there's some evidence to suggest ibuprofen can inhibit bone healing.

Take it for what it's worth.

Thanks- I've read that in a few articles on line as well; I've cut out the ibu for the time being

my heel does feel better w/ 3 days off my feet, I can now put a little weight on it- I have to wear my shoes in the house, barefoot seems to aggravate it

                      I'm icing for 20 minutes, 20 minutes w/o, repeat
