Me, the Barbie version

I'm back. We had a front blow through while I was running, so it was 74 degrees when I left and 57 and raining by the time I returned home (after stopping at the pet store and grocery store). I did okay, ran about four miles total in 50 minutes. I ran the first 1.5 miles on grass, which always seems to slow me down even more than the trail and took a full tumble during mile 3 (ironically when I was thinking about how well I was doing). Pride goes before a fall, literally, I guess. I am grateful that I was on a powdery dirt portion of the trail instead of the rocky or gravely portions. Still, it really hacked me off and I ran an extra mile out of spite. My knees hurt more than usual, but I am not sure if that is because of the fall, almost a week off of running or something else. My form was good, so I am leaning towards the fall and spiteful mile as the culprits. I better shower and tend my wounds. Sheesh! Thank you all for keeping me in line. I will pull out of this. Kitrin PS I did not scream, Greg, so you would not have needed to come save me. Wink I am glad you are out there!
Good for you. An extra mile motivated by spite sounds good to me. That's the piss and vinegar you need to keep going. You need to find it somehow each day, without falling.

"Run slowly, run daily, drink in moderation, and don't eat like a pig" Dr. Ernst Van Aaken. Sorry ultrasteve.

Good for you, Kitrin! Wait until your next run to see how your knees feel (if you don't fall on them again Wink ). If they're still bothering you, back off on the miles just a little bit, then work your way back up. And make sure your shoes don't have too many miles on them.

        Ultrachick

I'm here, floundering. Class is going well. I've got a paper due next week that I've started but really need to just sit down and do it. It's on IT Band syndrome since I'm the queen at managing that injury Big grin. But we've also started a new chapter so I have to keep up with that too. I don't know what I've been busy doing this week-a lot of piddly stuff like updating my palm with my kids school schedule (they don't have school Thurs and Fri for teacher stuff days), put in my ski school schedule as well to possibly plan on working extra there, I need to get some continueing ed credits for my ski instructor certification so looking at that this morning. I got my hair done today (cut & color), met a new friend for coffee this afternoon for possible business networking, track workout with my coaching client after and lastly....it's mine and Jack's 5th anniversary of being together!!! I did run today, twice, 3 miles this morning and 4.5 around the track with my client being pace bunny. I've got boot camp tomorrow morning, physical therapy, strength training and kids hanging at home to entertain. That's my life. Buddo, Jack doesn't mind if I run at night alone. That's what will be happening this winter (which is on it's way-spitting snow here today!) I don't remember what you are referring to....? Kitrin-keep it up girlfriend. Don't think-put your clothes on and go run! Hi Leslie! I'll check in tomorrow, Kelly
If you never go fast, you'll never go fast.
Hi - Kelly - I think Buddo's comments re Hub not like running on the trails at night was for me. I had said something about him probably not liking me running trails at night. You sound busy, girl! Lots of various types of exercising going on. Don't know how you do it. Had my body assessment done today. And after giving the results to my coach and my quick recovery from the marathon, he's giving me the heads up to run the Desert High 30k (as opposed to the 50k) on December 7. Yea!! I have to go down there anyway, so it wouldn't sucked not being able to participate. And with him looking at the results of the assessment, he says I'm in really good shape. It's not that I didn't figure I was, it's just that it's nice to have it confirmed. Sometimes I look at things like my sort of poochy belly and I think, well, if that was gone, then I would definitely be in good shape. And then other times I look at the muscles I've developed, especially in my legs, and I think, wow. What a trip! I actually have muscles! He'll be sending me my new workout schedule tomorrow, and it looks like we'll be upping my HR levels based on the tests, and I'll also be doing my long runs based on mileage now. I'm also going to be his guinea pig for some new things he learned at this coaching class. This should be fun! Later!

            Me, the Barbie version

Leslie, congrats on the report! I need to see an endocrinologist to have my thyroid checked but I hate looking for a new Dr. Kelly, hang in there with the class and know that I feel your pain. I have midterm this week. Ugh! Greg, thank you for the encouragement and let me return the favor. You will be great this weekend! Go Greg! I am driving four hours (one way) to Austin to see my husband today. I hope he will run a short couple miles with me this evening. We'll see. One way or another, I need to keep my legs moving. I drive the four hours back home tomorrow. See you later, Kitrin
Howdy everybody! Yeah Leslie and Kelly. Sorry for the confusion. I was replyng to Leslie. How's the IT feel now Kelly? I was reading Ultrarunning Mag and saw reference to Jack and you. In an article on the VT100 they have a picture of Jack. In a report on Finger Lake Fifties it shows Jack setting a new masters record. Names you too: "Kelly Wilson, 40, of Vermont placed second to LaPierre, winning the masters title in 9:10:57". Somewhere in there I saw a reference to Jack as an ultrarunning legend. Imagine that, I'm psuedo-friends with two ultrarunning big wigs. Smile Cool. Congratulatios on the anniversary! You guys gonna celebrate by running something cool? Sitting here icing my right achilles as it hurts. May be tendonitis. Not sure. It's not major. I have a chest cold too. Coughing up ugly green phlegm today. I'm supposed to do 6 today. I'm going to do my streak maintenance 1 mile, then see how I feel. Been feeling a little beat down, lack of enthusiasm for last week or so. Not good to be feeling this way before a long run. To add another sour note, it's supposed to rain Saturday and Sunday too. Bummer. Not sure what I will wear then for the race. I wore a shell and shorts with a cotton t yesterday morning, 40 degrees out. Soaked me from the inside out. That's probably not a good plan for the race. Probably a fleece? I have Frog Togs from backpacking, maybe I'll bring one of those. I'm not worried about getting wet, I'm worried about hypothermia more. It's supposed to be 50 or so during the day. Anyway, should be an interesting day. Oh, and to top it all off, I ate at a Persian restaurant couple days ago. Been running for the john everycouple of hours. May have to eat some Immodium prior to the race. Don't like that idea as I never have before a long run and don't want to try something new during the run. Whatever. Wish me luck. Three more days!

"Run slowly, run daily, drink in moderation, and don't eat like a pig" Dr. Ernst Van Aaken. Sorry ultrasteve.

Kitrin, Kelly's right. Don't think, GO. Think afterwards. Your knees will adapt.

"Run slowly, run daily, drink in moderation, and don't eat like a pig" Dr. Ernst Van Aaken. Sorry ultrasteve.

I'm a bad friend! Kelly, good for you with the report. For what it's worth, porn and advertising have skewed men's standards for women's figures. I kinda like the belly pooch. Knock kneed bimbo's don't do it for me. Baby gotta have some back and curves, ya dig? Sounds like you're thinking fitness and I'm talking image, but I'm just sayin. Pooch smooch, consider it an extra gas tank. Thanks for the encouragement Kitrin. You just keep running. Get to the doc, figure that junk out, but keep running. It can only do you good. Run comfortably to get more oxygen into your system and let the healing begin. I hope you enjoy your time with your hubby. Is he a runner? Maybe you could both encourage one another to keep active. Keep your nose in the books Kel. Sounds like you have a busy but well rounded schedule.

Greg, Greg, Greg - You keep getting Kelly and me mixed up. Which is actually a compliment! Maybe it means I can go out and bust some serious ass on the trails now!! And you're right - advertising, movies, magazine covers - they all add to American society's skewed image of what women are suppose to look like. It's always been a huge irritant to me that some guy with a beer gut and 50 lbs. overweight has the audacity to cap on a woman who has some weight on her. Whenever I hear comments along those lines from any of our guy friends, I not-so-politely put them right back in their place. And - you have the miles and training under your belt. Take care of yourself these next couple of days to try and get over whatever crap you have. Lots of sleep, rest, hot tea w/honey and lemon, and good nutrition. And then you're the one who's going to kick butt this weekend. We'll all be rooting for you! Kitrin - Even if your hub doesn't run with you, get yourself out there, even if it's only for a couple of miles. Then think of how energized you'll be for him afterwards! Big grin Kelly - Congratulations on the anniversary! Did Jack run naked in the fields behind your house?? Wink

                        Me, the Barbie version

I agree with you Greg, this community is great! I am SO GLAD to hear that you are doing better. Your list of ills made me keep saying "Poor Greg," "Oh, poor Greg!" Of course, you are tougher than that and you proved so with your run today. I will pray for sun this weekend. Leslie, I am VERY familiar with the belly pooch. I have one too. I talked to my sister on the phone today and her Dr. told her that she is in great shape, but could stand to lose the belly pooch. Common problem. We have diabetes in our family bigtime and the Dr. says that the belly fat plays to that. Hmmmm. I thought fat was fat, but I guess I was wrong. How is the paper going Kelly? My midterm is not moving as quickly as I hoped, but I made some good notes on it today. How is your training? Any more improvements? I feel so honored to know the semi-famous. Happy Anniversary! I ran for 20 minutes with my Hubby tonight. I actually took up running to in an attempt to keep up with him while he was in the Army. While he was in Iraq, he ran the Baghdad 10 miler and trained for a 1/2 marathon and that inspired me to do what I am doing now. Unfortunately, he now works for FEMA and has been chained to his desk 12-16 hours per day 7 days per week since Hurricane Dolly hit Texas in July. He is struggling to keep in shape. After we finished our run, he looked at me and said, "Congratulations, you are outrunning me now." It made me proud and broke my heart at the same time. As for the depression thing. I am fine now that I am three days into treatment. I feel so lucky to live in a time when we have medication.
Howdy. Don't cry for me Kitrin (sung to that Evita tune). I'm fine. I have no problems. A little shin pain, dysentery, hip pain....big whoop. This is my hobby. Most of the world is concerned about getting food and shelter, or not dying. Remebering that helps keep things in perspective for me a little. Glad to hear you got some meds and are propping up one leg of the stool that informs our emotions. Combine that with some exercise, rest, good nutrition, and some insight into your thinking, and maybe you can come off those meds soon. Grab yourself by the scruff of the neck and make your life happen. Have you signed up for your race yet? How soon is it? I think I remember you saying you signed up for a half marathon, right? Keep running girlfriend. It will only do you good. Start a streak like me. It will put some spine into your will and resolve. I'm going on a month here.

"Run slowly, run daily, drink in moderation, and don't eat like a pig" Dr. Ernst Van Aaken. Sorry ultrasteve.

Greg - Good luck this weekend, my friend!! Hope the ills that plagued you the last couple of days are better. And no more Persian food for a couple of days. Kitrin - Glad the meds have turned things around. A friend of mine has a thyroid problem, as well, and we can always tell when she's getting out of whack. Exercise does help her keep things under control, too. Kelly - Hope you're keeping your head somewhat above water. Got my new training schedule yesterday - tomorrow I start my long runs (12 miles) in my new, and hopefully improved, HR range of 140-155 in prep for the 30k in December. I need to study the elevation chart of that thing. Coach says it looks like it's a constant up for the first 15k then down after. Hmmmm. Anyway, will be running with my bud and Coach tomorrow, and she's already hassling me about the HR, and how I haven't been running to my full potential, and the pain is only mental . . . I had to remind her that the bod has to get used to the new range. It's not like I'm gonna be able to go out there and go "Hey! Yeah! This works much better!" And since I'm the guinea pig for things he learned at his coaching certification class, I'll be running for miles on my longs as opposed to time, which means my new program takes me all the way up to 17 miles before it starts to taper. Over and over and over the same trails in the Arcata Forest to get in 17 miles Dead . . . I may end up killing somebody. Wink Have a great weekend, everyone!

Coach Bill is being too conservative-you just did a marathon. You're already built up! If you're feeling good at 12 keep going to 15. I think you should get at least one 20 miler in if not two before the 30k (which is only 18 miles). Check out the latest Running Times-good article on not doing the traditional taper. Go for it! Kitrin, glad you're getting help and seeing the hubby. Keep going girlfriend! Buddo, I'm glad Leslie posted to say you're getting us mixed up because I had no idea what you were talking about. That's OK as long as someone sets us straight. Glad you're feeling better and your run went well. I'll be thinking about you this weekend-hope it goes well. The race director is a friend of mine-Jerry Turk. He and Jack ran together during their first VT100s. Kerry, now his wife, and I got to know each other and have been friends since! Have a good weekend-I'll be writing my paper, watching my son play football and trying to go long! Kelly
