Neo-Trail Runners Extreme Team - April 2009 (Read 268 times)

Hi Folks - I'm back from my vacation Down Under! Sounds like everyone is still percolating right along. Had a great time in Australia, and, except for the long plane flight, would highly recommend a visit. We're definitely going back someday. On our last day there, Sunday, April 5, I participated in weekly Sunday run with the Sydney Striders. Luckily, it was their Ten Bridges Classic run, which meant we ran over, what else, 10 bridges! Including the famous Harbour Bridge. I did the 20k length, and the club president, Jim Moody, was my escort through the city - thank goodness, 'cause I definitely would've gotten lost. He, however, is a good runner, and although he held himself back, that man ran me into the ground! I felt like I was running a race as opposed to participating in a leisurely Sunday run. But it was tons of fun, and he and other runners who were in our vicinity from time to time were great sports about letting me take pictures and taking pictures of me. I was proud of myself in that I kept to my running schedule while gone, and even did my hill and speed work. I haven't run since Sunday, however, but will get back on the wagon tomorrow. My body is still on Australia time (we just got home late Monday, 17-hour time difference), and I've been up since 1:00 a.m. Not feeling so bright-eyed and bushy-tailed at the moment, and am only hoping to make it through the day without passing out from lack of sleep. Later!

Welcome back Leslie! Sounds like a great time and the beauty of running is you can do it anywhere-awesome you didn't miss a beat! I'm taking a quick moment to check in then it's back to anatomy. I have my second exam this week I'm preparing for. It's due by Monday night and we're going to CT for the weekend so not much will get done there. I'm actually going to race on Saturday at the Northern Nipmuck 16 mile trail race-my first race since the 100. My goals are not very high-just to finish and enjoy the woods. The trails at the lower elevations are open-just muddy from all the rain we've gotten lately-however the trails up high are still buried with snow and it's still snowing! So needless to say I don't have much real trail time in compared to runners from MA or CT where there isn't as much snow. It will be fun and a chance to catch up with friends we haven't seen since last year. One other bit of news-did I tell you guys I'm a member of the Brooks ID program? Anyway, Brooks is having a camp for ID runners in June at Crytstal Mtn Resort in Washington and I was chosen to attend! 250 people applied for 75 spots and I got one! It's from June 18-21. I've never been there before and it's near Mt Rainier so it should be gorgeous. I hope everyone is doing well. Keep on keepin' on and I'll try to check in again soon! Kelly
If you never go fast, you'll never go fast.
Kelly - You're gonna have a great time in Washington. It should be really nice in June. What's the Brooks ID program?

Mount Rainier is really sweet... you'll have a great time!
Completed 5.25 hilly miles this a.m. with a few drops of rain here and there. Even though I felt like I wasn't doing so good, once I looked at the numbers, it wasn't as bad as I thought: Av/Best/HR 1. 9:52/8:32/139 2. 10:14/8:15/151 3. 9:58/8:09/155 4. 10:43/8:16/154 5. 10:43/7:59/156 6. 10:24/8:39/158 (.25 mile) Slept a little bit better last night. Was wide awake at 2:00 instead of 1:00, but I went to bed at 9:00 and crashed almost as soon as I laid down, so I went from 3.5 hours of sleep to 5 hours. Maybe tonight I'll get 7!! Big grin I've been reading a sports nutrition book (can't remember the name off the top of my head), and I'm trying to follow a better program of eating. Instead of my usual bagel w/cc and coffee, I'm trying to eat either a bowl of cereal and toast or oatmeal and toast each morning, a good lunch (which I try to do anyway), a small mid morning and mid afternoon snack (or small meal, as she puts it), then a lighter dinner. Hopefully, it'll keep me a bit more energized.

Did a nice 5 miler at lunch. Spring is here again, at least until is snows tonight. I planned to streak the month of March and liked it so much I just kept going... this was day 39. A friend is doing day 100 tomorrow, so some of us are celebrating with a midnight run up a local mountain with her tonight, followed by beers...
Left achilles likely has a tear. I've been giving it lots of rest but it's still hurting. I'm trying to nurse it back to health. My plan on running the Highlands Sky 40 miler in June is shot. I'd be happy to just get back to daily running. Every run is painful, when I do get them in. To boot, I tweaked my back really bad yesterday and today. Tough to walk much less run. Managed a 2.5 miler today. The extreme pain in my back took my mind off my ankle. I may have to take a couple weeks off entirely and start from scratch. Oh well. Live and learn. Glad to hear everyone's cool.

Kelly, You'll need to go up to Sunrise at Mt Rainier. It puts you almost right on top of the glacier and the views and trails are fantastic. I live about 50 miles from Crystal Mt. The White River 50 miler goes up trails real close by. Enjoy. Jim

As opposed to "embracing the suck" this morning, I embraced my pillow. I figured getting some sleep was more important right now than putting in 3 miles. Slept much better, but am still tired and could go back into snooze mode very easily right now. Tomorrow it's back to the trails for 12 miles. Yesterday, I signed up for my first trail run of the season. Yippee! I finally got our pictures downloaded to photobucket. There are a lot, and I deleted quite a few, too! Hopefully, by the end of this weekend I'll get something written up about the trip. Have a wonderful Good Friday, and a blessed Easter weekend.

Did 11.70 miles in the Arcata Community Forest today, my longest trail run in well over a month. Egads! Shocked And because Karen is getting ready for a very hilly 50k next month, we did a lot of climbing. Double Egads!! Shocked Shocked Coach Bil showed up for about half of what I had left to do, and by the time we got back to the cars, my legs were seriously torched. Holy crappola. Karen had 22 on her schedule today, Bill about 10 I think, so I bid them fond farewell, happy to be going home. All I want to do right now is take a nice long nap. Unfortunately, I have transcription work to do, and we're going to the roller derby tonight. That should be fun! Speaking of transcription - I just got a butt load of it from the Public Defender's Office for some murder trial. So far, 7 standard size tapes with more to come, and I have no idea how long each tape is 'cause they rewound them to the beginning. The County has authorized no more than $300 for transcription purposes. Guess what my total bill is going to come to?? Smile Okay - gotta get some work done. Have a great weekend, peeps!

Veeeeeery quiet in here. Yes, indeedy. Quite quiet. Hellooooo??? An hour of strength/core this a.m., and will do 3 miles after work. I hate running after work, but I couldn't drag myself out of bed early enough to get them in this a.m. The Hub's been sick, so I've been sleeping in the guest room on the good bed = no snoring Hub and only 1 or 2 cats = most excellent nights of sleep, unlike last week. {sigh} Who knew sleep could feel so good. Yes
