Katie, 13 years old, died after being struck by a speeding care while training for her freshman year of cross country in 1998. She was an honor student, accomplished violinist, an award winning writer, and distinguished runner. Katie was also an organ donor, giving the gift of life by donating 6 organs giving renewed life to 5 people.
Katie's 5K is run in memory of her, and to raise money for a scholarship given in her name.
At today's race there were 2 of the organ recipients, and 5 of the scholarship award-es. It was an honor to participate in this. Too see how Katie's life has blessed, and will continue to bless others was inspiring.
The awards were hand crafted pottery, which is absolutely beautiful. I was lucky enough to place 1st in the Master's division. It was a wonderful run, and I look forward to this next year.
