Running with Med tags (Read 368 times)

I have laced into my running shoe an ID tag that gives my name and ph#, my medical conditions and my Doctor name and number. This in addition to a braacelet on my wrist. Check out http://www.idtags.biz/ This guy used to post on the ADA BB all the time. What do you carry if anything?

To paraphrase an old poster: Today is the first day of the rest of your training. It doesn’t matter where you started or how far you’ve come. Today is the day. Your training didn’t start 6 weeks ago. Your training started the last time you hit the road. John “the Penguin” Bingham Life is not tried, it is merely survived if you're standing outside the fire

Starflight--Definitely a good idea that I still need to act on. I often think about my long runs and how if I got into any kind of trouble (diabetic or otherwise) I would have absolutely no ID on me. Presently I do take my cell phone that has numbers and ID on the screen but it would be good to take some med info with me as well. Technical tip: when including a web site in your post, highlight the URL then click the the link icon above (to the right of "formating" and and voila, your URL will automatically go inside the link tags and you will have a clickable link in your post! It will then look like this: http://www.idtags.biz/ Very cool.

I believe you are correct on the image thing but I'm not quite sure how to import it yet. John

Thanks John, I am used to using boards that auto link

Here is the answer to the uploading pictures Uploading pics (Read 8 times) Forrest posted: 8/12/2006 at 3:25 PM ModifyQuote Do we have the capability of uploading a picture to a post? What does the icon on the far right of the formatting tools do? THEY CAN'T THROW DIRT ON YOU IF YOU'RE RUNNING! Wingz view log posted: 8/12/2006 at 3:40 PM Quote Hi, Dave! With an avatar like that I can see why you'd be interested in loading more pictures!!! Awesome job! The "insert image" button is really just an easy way to create a link to a picture that's already out there on the internet. If you have a family album on-line and want to link to your images, you would use that button. (Copy and paste the location of the picture, highlight it in the message, and click the button and voila! Picture in the message!) Actually uploading pictures to the runningAHEAD server might be a feature that gets added in the future, but for now you can just link to pictures that are already out there. When I've wanted to show a picture of mine in a forum I upload it to my geocities webpage. But if you want to do this a lot, there are photo-album services out there that would suit your needs better. Hope this helps! Let me know if I managed to just confuse you more... WHO FARTLEK"D ?
This explains why I haven't been able to upload pics. So, if I understand, if you have an on-line site for storing pics, then paste the URL in, highlight it and click on the pic formatting icon. John

Yes there are many free sites out there to store your photos. I use future shop to make a family album. Saves a lot of space on your hard drive. They sound like they will eventually add the cabability to upload pics in the futureWell,It's time to get ready for my run.

When I was first diagnosed, the diabetes specialist my mom took me to really made a big deal out of wearing identification. He checked for my medic alert on every visit. I think he finally got through to me, because I wear my medic alert almost every day, and even removed the chain bracelet that it came on and had a couple of beaded bracelets made so I can match whatever I'm wearing. When I run, I usually wear my medic alert necklace and I also have an ID on my shoe that was made by Road ID (www.roadid.com).
Hey Guys I found this site where you can print out a coupon and mail it in for a free diabetes id necklace. I don't know if they will send me one in Canada but I'm going to try. May be able to drill a couple of holes in it and lace it into my shoes. http://www.diabeteswellness.net/wellness/default.asp?ID=219 Dave

Hi Gregg! Thanks for telling me about this little group... I don't run, as my knees cannot handle it from injuries occurring 35 years ago, but I walk 5 1/2 miles daily at 3.8 mph. Can I be a member here too at that pace?? Big grin I still check in at the ADA site, but the contact I got with the ADA site guru turned me off a bit and I mostly read there now. The other thing is I keep reading the same stories and questions over and over there and do not find much that interests me. It's good for infomation, however there are many trolls there who spout incorrect information, and I just cannot be happy there anymore. Myself, I have suffered a low on my daily walk. Twice. The worst time I crossed the really busy four lane road that I travel and I stumbled off the curb. I got part way across, and felt really slow and almost drunken. I felt like I was crawling out of a canyon at the far curb! I twigged about 100 feet after that and sat down at a little fire hydrant cutout off the road. 41. I stared at it until comprehension. Then I ate four rolls of Smarties candy, which are exactly the same ingredients as the diabetes emergency glucose tabs. I then put a peppermint candy in and walked to the Publix Grocery where they all knew me. I was really having troubles, and at this point my meter ran out of strips and I could not load another cartridge. The manager took one look at me and knew I was in trouble. They drove me home where I recovered shortly thereafter. I cannot stress the importance of having people know what is happening. The fire station personnel at the end of the street all know me and would know exactly what was going on if they found me. I not only have a shoe tag out there for all to see, ...but I also have a dog tag hanging off my "butt bump" or "man-purse" or whatever you call the waist held pouch I always carry. Even a stranger would find the emergency information. In my job, I am not permitted to wear anything about my neck or wrist for fear it would fall into the products. So this little shoe tag is my solution. Anyway, thanks for letting me know this place exists, Gregg! I hope you guys will accept a "slow poke" runner into your midst!
                        Welcome aboard, Mark!! John

Glad to see you here Mark!! I saw your name on the members list last night when I checked in during half time (a budding Colts fan) and was just waiting for you to post. Walking or running we face the same challenges out in public, so yeah even the slow (I run slow too) are welcome. I am in management now at work and tell my new people (Just informed via email I have a new hire now) that if I get to acting strange just ask when I last had something to eat. Never been below about 69 and I sure didn't like it!! Felt like the earth was rolling and I moved out of Calif more than 12 years ago and thought I left that all behind

I am not on any Meds that causes me to produce insulin, nor am I on insulin, so I can't see how it would be possible for me to experience a low BS. The lowest I have seen is 82.
                            Age is not an illusion

But you can! Trust me! Been there done that! SEVERAL times!! And sometimes in the ER they will give you an IV with glucose in it. That is what brought me to the point of getting one!! I ware one that Mark shows on his shoe. I have one on my key chain, one in my wallet and one on my right wrist. Over kill? Yep! But when I run I am not carrying my wallet or other information and that the bracelt just says DIABETIC. The tag on my shoe gives my name and # my Doc's name and # and my conditions. That gives my family a better feeling when I am out running be it training or at a race. Talk to your doc about it. Bet he/she advises you to get one!
