What's happening with Miles Game? (Read 34 times)

No nag list or results for last week. No nag list this week. Is it finally dying a slow death?

     2024 Races:

          03/09 - Livingston Oval Ultra 6-Hour, 22.88 miles

          05/11 - D3 50K
          05/25 - What the Duck 12-Hour

          06/17 - 6 Days in the Dome 12-Hour.

We (aplodder, Lanie, Huenix and I) have talked about the general downward spiral the Miles Game has taken over the past year or so, and Lanie suggested we do this to see whether people even noticed (Lanie suggested it - but I certainly went along).  So that's what's going on.

It is not a huge chore for us to be administrators of the game, and we could go on forever.  But there will always be some level of attrition, and the level of new signups has been extremely low, and shows no sign of turning around.  So at current rates the attrition is going to win, eventually. I think part of the low level of signups is due to the game being split between two different forums, and the one on RA being a user group you have to affirmatively sign up for.

I will probably post something with a more formal poll this weekend.  But in the meantime, feel free to post your thoughts re: the future of the Miles Game.  Has it had its run and is it just time to pull the plug?  Or would you prefer to see it go on (recognizing that at the current rate it might end up fading out sometime anyway)?

I think it's fun and would like to see it continue.  I didn't know the attrition rate was so bad though.  My team (MRT) seems really solid, but I guess that isn't the case for every team. Sad

Maybe some more recruiting on other forms (not just Beginners and Beyond) might help?

I've been a team captain for about 5 years now and the game isn't the same. I tentatively posted asking to step down and would someone volunteer to take over. No responses received. I'm still in the game only out of loyalty to a few remaining team members who have been around as long as I have, but I intend to leave the game no later than the end of the year anyway, assuming it lasts that long.

Speaking only for myself, I would rather pull the plug on the game than see it die a slow death. The 2014in2014 game is still going strong.

I'm still in the game only out of loyalty...

This is how I feel.  I've only been in the game for a couple of years, but I feel a sense of loyalty to my team.  My team is down to 10 members and I only recognize three of the names, and we have no interaction as a team.  Everyone else I "know" and have gotten friendly with has left.  I'd have done the same if I wasn't team captain.  I feel like I am just going through the motions in posting my weekly miles.  The game seems to have lost steam, lost interest, and lost a lot of players.  There used to be a lot of chatter and threads among other teams, and you just don't see that any more.  I think it's run its course.  The 2014_in_2014 game is much more engaging and interactive.

My sense is that a lot of people feel that way. My team threads here and on RWOL have been very quiet lately.

Sounds like everyone is in agreement, so it's understandable that the game is ending.  I am disappointed though, because I have no interest in the 2014 game. Sad  I keep hearing about playoffs and all-star weeks and stuff and I don't want to feel pressured to run more than I'm ready for and wind up injured.  The Miles game seems/seemed more open to people just following their own schedule.

Music_girl117, I suspect that some of the closer knit teams will keep their threads/FB groups going.  I certainly plan to keep Happy Feet's FB group going.  Maybe MRT will stay in touch as well.

I think when RWOL got fragmented last year that it hurt participation in this. The old regulars are split between here, Facebook, and RWOL now.
