December Donuts (Read 569 times)

Smashy!!!

    Hey all,

Good luck to Flinders, Sra and Lcanida (wherever she is). Josh and DR are up tomorrow--smash it!

It looks like we made the right choice moving over to RA because it looks like Pluck cannot delete users, only hide their posts. That means they cannot ban spammers, only hide the spam. That is why it looked like they nuked the forums: all the spam threads were made invisible. The only thing they can do right now is delete spam one by one, and apparently they are getting it to the tune tens of thousands a day. Some of the mods are vigilint doing that while others are not. But it's only a matter of time before the spam returns--without a real filter. Anywho, happy running!

    Run Strider Run!

I forgot that we have a new thread per month!  Here's what I posted in the other one just a moment ago:

Happy Belated Birthday Akalei and Dreamn!

Good luck this weekend Josh, Sra, Docket, Flinders, and anyone else missed!  Excited to read your RR!

6 slow miles on the TM this week was all I did.  Still in hiding, but am starting to get a bit more excited (I think it has to do with 2013 being around the corner).

BTW, for anyone that likes the Asics GT-2160/2170 (recall there are a few in our group), Dick's has them on "Cyber week" sale for $80 and free shipping.

One question about the forum threads - after a year we will need another "December Donuts" thread like the one we're in now.  Should these have a year in front of them like "2012 December Donuts"?  The engineer in me could not resist bringing this up!

      Have a nice weekend!

        Good morning!

Good luck Flinders, Sra, Lcanida, Josh, DR!!!

Sounds like a good price on the Asics.  I tried them briefly but I'm a loyal Brooks Adrenaline wearer Smile

I ended up with 12 last night because I was feeling good so will probably keep it to 8 today.

Good luck to this weekend's racers! My hubby is doing 2 5k's and a 10k this weekend. I will be sticking to my training plan. It's really hard not to go race with him but I'm trying to focus on the results I need for March thru October next year. Flu-type virus seems to be on the way out. Still stuffy and sore throat but the headache and body aches are mostly gone and I don't feel like I have a fever anymore. I'll be doing yesterday's scheduled workout today which includes a 5k TT. Tomorrow will be a 10 miler on the road.

          2013 races:

          3/17 Shamrock Marathon

          4/20 North Coast 24 Hour

          7/27 Burning RIver 100M

          8/24 Baker 50M

10/5 Oil Creek (distance to be determined)

Fairly uneventful week for me. Recovery runs of 5 / 5 / 6 so far this week, and scheduled for a 7 on Sunday to make 23 for the week. After my 10.15/10.30-pace runs last week, progressively quicker at 10.00, 9.45 and 9.30. Next week plan a slight increase in mileage and a first post-marathon visit to the gym. First week of my marathon plan which starts in three weeks is only 33/35 miles, so can increase gently to 30/33 over the next three to four weeks. Only 21 weeks until May! That makes the winter seem awful short!

AmiK - I would need to look a little deeper but...I personally think you can go sub 4.  Its likely going to hurt a tad, but I think you can do it if you diligently pace yourself.  9:05 to 9:09 and dont go any faster till after the twenty mark and even then only if you have it in you.  What happened at mile 11 in your is half patty-cakes to what will happen to you after 20 miles.  If you save yourself for the end, I think you can make it.  Of course, everything in this statement could be wrong.  You know yourself better than I do.

Banshee - Sorry to hear about the yuck stuff.  Glad to hear you are feeling bettier.

Hope to see Lcanida and Snow around here sometime.

              Three Martini Lunch

                Morning all!

HM for me this morning (TCS Annapolis Half, if anyone is interested).  Finished 1:39:59 (and 4/10ths, if we want to split hairs: the timing station where we could check chip times gave three decimal places on the second, so it really was :59.431), so I hit my A goal with six-tenths of a second to spare. Happy and sore.  And spending the rest of the morning thawing out.

Gun time temps were in the mid 30s, with some onshore breezes, and pea soup fog.  This was the first time I had run in really foggy weather -- race or just a run -- so it was a bit odd.  Not being able to see more than 75 feet in any direction threw off my pacing, because I had nothing really to judge my speed by.  It was also a bit eerie, because gun time was 7am, and everything was deserted and quiet...then you'd turn a corner and a building would loom up out of the murk.

The race was decently well organized (there was a hiccup with the police escort at the front about a half mile into the race; the motorcycle turned one street too early, so the leading pack had to double back (and got a steeplechase across a parking lot), adding about three tenths of a mile to their run).  The course was nice -- we got to run through the historic downtown of Annapolis -- if hilly.  I thought I would die on the bridge over the Severn river; we got that twice, once at about mile 6 and then again at mile 10.  I am always surprised how hilly Annapolis is, given that it is right on the water.  That just tells me I need to train on hills more than I have.  However, the placement of mile markers bore little relation to observable distances, so my watch splits are practically useless for analysis because I don't know if the distance between any  two markers was even close to a mile.

I went into this race with a "have fun with it" goal; I'd like to push to see where I am, but if I wasn't feeling it, then I'd just run it for fun.  I haven't run more than 21 miles in any week since my full in October, so I wasn't expecting tip top performance.  But in the end, I'm happy with it.

AmiK:  I agree with Indy that sub-4 is within your grasp if you can finish out your training and run a disciplined race.  I think if you hone in on 9:00-9:10 pace for your MP runs to learn exactly how that pace feels and to practice holding that pace, you should put yourself in a good position for race day.  I think HH Int 2 is a good plan.  I have loosely followed it for my two marathons. (I say loosely because I have had NRR injuries that derailed me from following the plans exactly to the letter).  One of these cycles I want to try to get through the whole thing without doing something stupid, but that might be iffy.

I felt Indy-like in getting up at 4 a.m. for my race.  Somehow crack of dawn (or the middle of the night, depending on one's perspective), is easier to do when it is warm outside.

Banshee: hope you kick the crud and feel better!

                    Flinders-great sub 1:40!  Very impressive.

I ran a 10-ishK race this morning.  The races here in Belgium are never exactly the distance they say they are. This one was advertised online as 10km, but the registration form today said 10.45km, which is about 6.5 miles.  It ended up reading 6.3 miles on my Garmin.  Anyway, it went OK, but not great.  I finished in 49:49, 7:56 pace.  I had a slow first mile (8:26) because of crowding and then tried to make up too much in the 2nd and 3rd miles and paid for it in the 2nd half.  It was one of those rolling races that is never flat and the hills didn't feel good by the end!  I don't know about placement because my oldest was home babysitting the others and she'd texted me saying the 4 year old was crying for me, so I came home as soon as a finished.

Bel, congrats on the 10k. Did you have a goal? Or was it a fun run? It's forgivable that they mismeasure their 10ks, as long as they don't mismeasure their marathons!

Flinders and Jag:  Thanks again for the advice.  I finally bought a Garmin this week (love Amazon lightning deals) and will use it for the first time tomorrow.  I am hoping it helps me really hone in on pacing!  Flinders, I did have to laugh at you calling 4 AM the middle of the night...I get up and run at 4 pretty much every day, because I work about 65-80 hours/week and that is the only time really available to me!  I will probably be the only person at the Disney Marathon who isn't bothered by being on a bus at 4 AM!

Good afternoon donuts!  Getting ready to head out for the SEC championship game.  We're watching at a friend's house.  Ran a nice 10 miles this morning at 9:41 pace.  Perfect running weather...high 40s, clear, no wind.

amik:  proper pacing is soooo key.  +1 on the last 6.2 in the marathon being more difficult than your HM experience.  You really need to discipline yourself not to go out too fast.  That will be the key to how high the suck-o-meter goes in the last miles.  Welcome, by the way!

cbus:  I think it was you that mentioned the propensity for injury with Pftiz runners.  The more I think about my Chicago training, the more I tend to agree with you.  That is a difficult program that I don't think I was ready for...at least all that hard quality work.

flinders and bel:  congrats on great races!

Jenny,  Great run!  Even if it was 10-ish, rather than exactly 10K.  And Thanks!

Cbus: Thanks!  PF didn't bother me during the race, even on some of the pounding downhills.  After the drive home (45 minutes or so), it was very angry.  The couple blocks between where I parked and my house were miserable (or, more generally, I walked like an 85 year old with arthritis).  But after rolling it on a frozen water bottle for a bit, stretching, and putting on KT tape after I got cleaned up, it seems to be better.  Tender, but it isn't messing with the way I walk.  If it doesn't bother me during my run, I'm generally happy.  I can hobble around afterwards and not worry too much.  I'm finding that cushioned shoes (old running shoes, or cushy insoles in other shoes) seem to make the non-running moving around a lot better.  Those things probably help take some stress off of it, too.

AmiK: we cross posted.  The middle of  the night reference was from a line of conversation this group had a while back.  Indy mentioned getting up at 2:30 am to do a MLR, and I think it was cbus who commented that 2:30 wasn't morning, it was the middle of the night.  I understand getting up early to get in runs.  I typically do it during the summer months to get a run in before the heat of the day, and likely will be doing so again as I get into a new round of MRT.
