Training (Read 5242 times)

Crystal caught me drinking some of her OJ, so she smacked me over the head, and I fell down, and had to be taken by emergency services. So Crystal made up some story about me falling down and forgetting stuff. And they wrote me up as a head injury trauma case, cause every time they asked me what happened, I didn't want Crystal to smack me again with the wooden spoon, so I said I didn't know, so I went to PG Trauma Center for a couple days. And they asked me my name over and over. It got so boring that I wanted to start making up new names, but I was afraid what might happen if I did that.

I did ask Crystal to ask the nurses if I could climb out of my hospital bed to go running, to preserve my streak, but apparently she failed to convey the importance well enough.

How come you didn't tell me that's what happened?  All I heard was, "I don't remember".  That's how people get out of washing dishes.

Did Perry go down during a run or just at home.  I see the April 1 entry said he was running sick.

        At home.

It's a 5k. It hurt like hell...then I tried to pick it up. The end.

Third time is the charm.  Finally completed the 3 X 1600 sub 6 minutes with 800 jog recoveries.  I ran 5:54, 5:57, and 5:58.  The first one felt easy, the second one felt hard, and the third one felt hard. If I had truly been motivated I may have been able to do a fourth 1600, but I am not sure if I could have held sub 6 or whether I would have ended up at like 6:05. The jog recoveries were legitimate in that there was no dallying around.  Mike agreed to pace me, what I forgot was that unlike when I run it with other runners who are struggling to make the time and we kind of agree to stand around for 15 seconds or so to catch or breath before starting the cool down.  Not this time, we ran the two 800 recoveries in 4:05 and 4:10.   However, I did dally around after I finished my third one sub 6 minutes for about a minute before doing a jog recovery lap and running the 800.  I ran the 800 in 2:46 and that was no even 2:46.  First lap was in 1:19, I then lost Mike who ran a 2:37.  Second lap I ran a 1:27, but I could have gone a couple seconds faster if I had somebody to pace off, but its one of those things where when you are giving it close to 100% and you get dusted you lose motivation.

            Congrats!

But you're racing HM this coming weekend, right?

Even that may not happen as I found out they don't have race day packet pickup.

It was an odd experience at the fitness center this morning. I walked on the treadmill for half a mile (working up to 4 mph), and then I did the usual Monday biceps/back lifting routine. Never really broke a sweat. Anyway, I think the bike machine is my best bet for now, but I'm waiting until tomorrow to try it.

Is there a lump in your calf?

                  Durrr

Nothing that's detectable. I hope that's further indication that this is a minor issue that will soon be resolved.

Thats a good sign, but there is undoubted muscle tearing in your calf.  If the muscle tear was big enough you'd have a lump.  That said even small tears take a few weeks to heal.  Like I said, the good news is speed work is what will re-tear the muscle, so you will probably be able to do some light running fairly soon.  Once you return to running if you want to play it safe, you'd probably want to run easy for 10 or so days (you can log decent mileage during that period, but probably don't run faster than 6:30 pace).  After that period you can probably give speed work another try.

It is possible to run a lot of mileage without hardly any speed; my last 120mi are an example, except for the Hospice race, I think.

So is it foolish that I still have hope of being able to do a brisk 17-mile long run this Saturday? The St. Michael's Half is only 4 weeks from this Saturday.

Long term probably not a good idea because you calf will be really tight after 17 miles, but as long as the pace is easy, you may manage not re-tear the torn muscle.

Look at my log after the 2012 Crofton 10k.  I had to pull out because of a minor hamstring tear.  I was able to run within a few days and I think complete a long run only a week later.  However, everything stayed tight partly because of the long run and then when I tried to do speed work only 11 days after the injury and only 2 days after the long run, I tore it worse.

Wrote a program to find highest 7day rolling totals from an RA export (tab format). Here are mine - limited to consecutive 7day spans over 99.0 miles. Asterisks denote highest to date.
