First 100 - Recovery (Read 425 times)

5 weeks after LT100, I am still not recovered.  Once I hit 10-15 miles depending on the course/pace, I am dead legged.

Curious - how long has it taken others?

If I knew I would tell you, my body is still not back.

i am going to run on more soft surfaces.

I have been taking Ice Baths, getting massages, and taking Hot Baths after those massages.

        1)  I agree with A1 - It takes me a really long time

        2)  The 1st time you make a nice 20+ mile run you may need to go 30-45 seconds slower than you think you need to just to get over the hump

Its more than just muscular - It puts a lot of stress on the body - Hell just getting your body to properly coordinate all the complex things that has to happen to run smooth again will take awhile.

The last 2 years after an all out 24 hour race - I have taken 2 months and 3 months to hobby jog to let myself recover.

Long dead ... But my stench lingers !

I totally agree, after my recent 87 mile trail run it has taken me a really long time to really get back on track. What with the general recovery, having caught a nasty cold, then seeing my mileage drop down and then falling short of a 22 mile run and staggering back to the car for a wussy 17 miles, I am not a happy bunny.

This has taken about 5 weeks so far but I think last weeks drop was more the cold. I agree with the others that I have to really come off the pace and get through the mental hurdles as well. Having said that I have set myself a very short term goal of running a 50 km in November so I have something to aim for and all I care about is running it comfortably otherwise I could really see myself dropping out.

            a story:

last night I met up with a few guys who are fast by most any standards.  we ran around at about 7:30ish pace for about an hour, i felt okay at the end but thought "i need another hour if i am going ot hit 100 this week" then i thought "fuck that, i am going to quit while I am ahead, and feeling okay"

I dont know if that was the right decision or not. meh

I felt really shitty until the 50k I did this weekend (exactly a month after my 100). It was tough and slowish, but it felt like I went from really shitty to slightly shitty. I was beginning to think I'd never recover. I was getting sore after every run it seemed like, then I wasn't sore at all after the 50k. I think my legs appreciated the soft dirt.

I have no advice on how to recover.  I was in really bad shape after Western States.  The downhills really damaged me.  I was pretty sure I would never recover to be the runner I was before that race.   I guess you just have to give it time and do what you can to let the body heal itself.
