new to the webstie and i think that this is a great site but i just want to know beore i sign up for a race what is the best 100 miler in the united states
That depends a great deal on the type of 100 miler you want to run. What are your priorities: scenic, roads, mountains, technical trail, large event, fast course, etc.?

Hmmm... scenic costal... Headlands 100, scenic mountain... Bighorn 100, Cascade Crest 100 (both have some take your breath away vistas...), scenic ass kicker... Superior Sawtooth
I am sure no one else will have an opinion...

hello folks! nice to meet you all! happy new year!
Hi, I'm new to this forum and hope to share and continue learning. I fell in love with trail running about 4 years ago while living in the Black Hills of South Dakota and fell in love with ultras about 3 years ago while living in Virginia and being a member of the awesome Virginia Happy Trails Running Club. My first 50K was in July 2010, first 50M in Aug 2010 and first and so far only 100M in May 2011. I next hope to run in the low key Resurrection Pass 100 here in Alaska (I moved here this past August).

Hi All!
I'm a relatively new runner with only a year and a half. I haven't done anything above a marathon yet but I feel already comfortable at 55 miles a week and with no injury yet.
My plan for the future is to continue training for the 26 milers this year, do a 10k under 40 and a 13.1 miler under 1:30 and then train and prepare for ultras. My dream would be to participate in the Trans Canaria... but I don't have set a date to that yet. I will first learn, increase my mileage and train-train-train. In fact I consider training and setting a race goal just as an excuse for doing two of the things that I like more in this live: running and planning stuff.
This all said I will for now follow the group as 'lurker' as I am not yet prepared and I have no ultra in sight yet. But I said the same shortly before my first half marathon: That I wasn't going to do one yet (this was four months after starting to run in 2010)...
I hope to see you soon on the trail!

Nice to have new members - Are all 3 of you new?

I live in flat Neenah, WI elevation @ 600ft above sea level - Nearest trail is 35 minutes away, better trail is 1 hour away. So although my heart is in trail running - I do a lot of flat land pavement pushing and TM running.
I have lately developed an adversity to actually training - I fought it off for a couple of years - Finally gave into it early November. So I am going to see how running ultras only to enjoy and complete goes this year.
If you have any questions about 24 hour (Pavement) racing - I have run a few - I am really a novice to 50k / 100M trail running with a few 50M under my belt. I used to like the 50M the best - But it seems that the 50k gets me to the post race beer faster.
Long dead ... But my stench lingers !
Hello All,
I am from the SF Bay Area and am returning to RunningAhead after a year away.
Thus far, my confirmed races for 2012 are Lake Sonoma 50 and MiWok 100k, both local.
Happy trails.
Welcome! Both of your races are on my wish list since they're "close" to home. I'm up in Humboldt Co.
Another aspiring ultra runner here, also from NorCal. I've done a few marathons but always road races (and training mostly on paved stuff). Two goals for this year are to get out on trails and do a 50k. My first trail HM is in March, and thinking about doing Lake Chabot 50k in November. I know, 50k is not the most ultra type of ultra, but gotta start somewhere.
My running club has put on the Bolinas Ridge aid station at Miwok for the past few years and this year we're also doing the Auburn Lakes Trail aid station for WS. Yours truly is one of the co-captains, so hope you all don't mind if I mostly lurk and maybe ask a couple questions along the way, like, what do you REALLY feel like eating in the middle of the night after running 85 miles?

Welcome!
Shut up and run
Welcome, Margaret! Lake Chabot - haven't done that one yet. Coastal Trail Runs puts on good events. I'm running the Grizzly Peak trail marathon in April.
Hi, I'm Gen, four marathons in and one in 8 weeks. I signed up for my first ultra (50mi) in October. I'll be snooping on your training plans and race reports.
50 mile is my favorite race distance for Ultras
My plan is similar to marathon training - When I am serious about it that is. I just add runs a month of 4-6 hours ~
The other more popular option is to do back to back long runs - This I have never understood ~ To me its like breaking your 20 miler into 10 in the morning and 10 at night. I would rather do 1 run of 35 to 45 miles than do 2 runs of 15-20. To me its not the same thing.
