Welcome to the WEEKEND! (DAILIES) (Read 20 times)

6.8 this morning. Better. RB wanted to walk the last mile, so we did.

Wow Lisa!! You did earn that beer!

Karen--enjoy extroverting! I am terrible at it. I just cringe at the idea of a social hour.

    Later!!

Morning!  I have 14 and weights tonight.

Lisa, nice job on the run!

Karen, sounds like fun.  Keep extroverting for a little while longer.

      Susan, nice run.

Will come back after Pacific Rim 2!

As part of the 2024 London Marathon, I am fundraising for VICTA, a charity that helps blind and visually impaired children. My mentor while in law school, Jim K (a blind attorney), has been a huge inspiration and an example of courage and perseverance. Please consider donating.

5 chilly miles again.  Oh how I wish it would warm up!  As for shagging - go with Lisa's definition.  Basically "hanging out" but not really "dating" with anything up to and including intercourse though does not have to.  I'd actually rather not know!  haha.  Ended up helping my nephew get his car started yesterday.  It had been sitting all winter and I have AAA.  Ran a few errands with him.  Such a good kid - fun to hang out with an almost 20 year old.  I got to hear all about his new girlfriend.  He's smitten.  Then I did go out to meet with friend and shagging dude.  It was pretty casual - just friends meeting up to watch basketball.  Really nice fella, easy to talk to.  But.  He's just 8 mo widowed.  Wife was killed in a boating accident.  Can't say I'm interested in that.

Kat - oh yeah!  How can I forget the polar bears!  For some reason I didn't realize that was in Canada.  I saw on the news you are getting some HEAT down there!  Hope you found the mitts!

Laura - nope, I refuse to believe we will get more snow.  Then it won't happen, right??!  I just want to get rid of what we have so it warms up a bit.  Goodness some years it's beginning patio weather by now.  Hope you had a nice time at the casino!!

Lizzie - awe shucks.  I'm blushing.  You are too kind.  But, maybe I'm really just secretly an ax murdered haha.  I just lead an unconventional life and am a sort of awkward dater.  More awkward it seems now since I'm so horribly out of practice!  I'm pretty content now to not care too much.  I bet your hair looks cauuuuuuuuuuute!  I won't do much different to mine - cover the grays and add some chunky highlights.  Then cut the mop.  It's way too long and unruly.  Your day yesterday sounds so nice.  Hooray for HCBF joining you!  Awwww, sorry your dad is slowing down.  It is SO hard to watch your parents age.  Hugs, sweet girl. I hope they have a great trip - that sounds awesome!!  The sub of the month at Subway is black forest ham.  I put it on flatbread with pretty much all the veggies.  So good!  I had to look up Which Wich and there are a few around here.  I'll have to make a point to try it out.  I had to chuckle at you being excited to see Fargo.  I don't want to burst your bubble but maybe dial back your excitement a touch since it's a pretty small town haha  I don't want you to be disappointed!  And, also can't guarantee cold weather - it was quite warm for the marathon a number of years ago.  All that said, I am going to do my darnedest to be the best possible hostess ever!  I cannot WAIT!!

Sue - yikes on the run yesterday.  Were you just under-fueled, maybe?  Looks like you bounced back this morning!  Nice miles!

Lisa - holy CATS great miles yesterday!  I hope that was the biggest burger EVER - you EARNED it!  And the beer.  Looks like you are BACK from that awful rib injury - yay!

Tessa!  LOL on the hand me down.  Yeah, not going there.  Afternoon miles are ALWAYS harder!  Though I suspect Damaris and Elina may disagree.

Karen - look at you being all social and extraverty!!  Woohoo!!  Have a great run this afternoon.  Oh!  I have a silly question for you....  when you eat your fried egg on top of your frozen pizza do you cook it separate and put it on top when the pizza is done or do you crack it on top the pizza and bake it with the pizza.  Asking for a friend.

Damaris - Pacific Rim 2?  Is that a movie?  Good luck with your 14.

I have Judy's potato soup recipe in the crock pot and nothing else on the agenda.  I see lots of couch time and basketball this afternoon.  My favorite!  Have a great day!

7 miles on the TM this morning, it was awful!  I don’t think it would have felt any better outside today, just felt awful and couldn’t get into it.  Was supposed to do 8, but no, 7 was bad enough.

anxious to hear from those racing this weekend, especially Diane

          Trails

Here's my Prairie Spirit DNF RR...guess everyone needs at least one lol.

Drove up to Ottawa, KS on Friday, not a bad drive but KS is pretty boring.  Ottawa is just 22 miles South of Lawrence, KS where I did the Hawk with Lisa.  Got to the host hotel at around 3 and got checked in.  Here's a clue this was not going to be good...I locked my keys in the car and realized it at 5 when I went to drive over to packet pick up.  The normal locksmith was closed but I got a 24 hour guy who got me going for $45 dollars and 10 minutes work.  I was so happy.  Headed over to pickup.  They had a spaghetti dinner and I sat and at with a lady named Tiffany who was doing the 50 miler.  She did her 1st hundred there the year before and said it was a nice course with great AS.  Went back to the hotel and got ready for Saturday.  Still anxious.

Got up at 4 am and they had breakfast for us.  Ate, had some coffee.  Weather at 5 am looked fantastic...56 SW winds at 6 mph, cloudy with  a high of 52.  0% chance of rain.  The 56 to 52 should have been another clue.  Put Leukotape on my back but it didn't want to stick to my hip areas, put some on my feet too.

The start is a 5 min drive with a mandatory briefing at 730 for our 8 am start.  I found a nice lady who was walking too so we stuck together.  She was raising money for her charity, Iron Heart and planned on just finishing.  There was a 2 mile out and back and then some more paved path, under the I-35 and then onto the rail trail.  Wind wasn't too bad at this point, back or from the sides.

An unmanned water station was at round 6 miles in and then our first manned AS at mile 10.  I dumped some pebbles out here...note to self, learn how to put on the gaiters, ate some stuff, put some in my baggie.  I'd had a couple of GUs, a rice krispie treat and had been steadily sipping from my hydration pack but I ate here, and I think the pickle was what caused the GI upset a few miles later.  I though for sure I'd be puking but managed not to...took a pepto.  We made it to the turn around AS at 17 miles. Here I sat and dumped out my shoes again.  Not hungry but I ate a rice krispy treat.  Used to port a potty and stomach was feeling better after I took an Scap.  Off we went to what for us would be the last AS before the finish.  Here's where I had to start battling the head wind and it was way more than 6 mph...this was the dreaded 19 mph with 30 mph gusts...it would drop a bit but then pick back up.  At 20 miles my back started hurting and I had to stop to bend over and stretch is.  Debbie was wonderful and would stop but by a mile out I wanted to cry and again throw up cause it hurt so bad.  She went ahead to have her husband get her poles out thinking that might help.  Maybe taking another Scap, some tylenol, and the poles would have got me through the last 7 miles but that's wishful thinking as I sit here with my back still screaming.

Debbie went on and one of the volunteers helped me to her husband's car and he drove me back to the start.  He had to help me out of their van and into the building and he's on oxygen...I grabbed some coffee as I was freezing then got my clothes and changed.  I saw the lady who did the 50 miler...9 hours for her!

The Colony AS was 44 minute drive so I didn't get to see Debbie come in.  I know her bib number so I'll check and see her time.  I'm so happy she finished.  I volunteered for 4 hours but by 10 pm I was exhausted and in pain still so I went back to the hotel.  I have to say those 100 milers are something to see at 61 miles.  Once I got back I took a hot bath and crawled into bed. Up at 330 and again at 6.  I went down and ate, showered and left and got home by 11:30.

A 2 1/2 hour drive leaves one with way too much time to reflect.  I wanted to cry so bad.  I don't know if it was the cold and wind, if hitting the deer did irreparable damage and I should have gotten it fixed sooner, if I should just give up ultra's and stick to HMs...once I unpacked I made an appt finally with my primary care doc and will see if I can get a referral to a sports therapist.  I know at least that core work needs to become a priority and not just hit or miss.

And that's the story.  Trying to decide if I'm hungry yet or not.  Have to get laundry going.

            Half Crazy K 2.0

10 miles with faster stuff in miles 8 and 9 just because. Still cold & windy, really getting annoyed with this weather.

Arimathea, the first 2 times I did the April Fool's race, it was the weekend after Easter. I think they moved it to later in the month after 2016, there was a freeze & gale warning, which made for absolutely miserable conditions. I imagine the volunteers were more miserable. By mid April, there shouldn't be that level of cold near the beach.

DHuffman, tough day. Totally not a doctor here, but I would think if your back is ok until 20 miles in, it is less a damage thing and maybe more a imbalance or lack of strength somewhere issue. Definitely don't skimp on the core work.

                Hello!!

Just back from 4.1, another sunny but windy day.  Oh well, I am kind of used to it by now lol.

Had fun at the casino though I have to admit it is not really my thing, I am way too cheap to play much $$ (since I always lose it in a few minutes) and it's boring just watching everyone else.  We had a nice dinner then I made it until 9:45 at the casino before heading to the room.  BF there until 11 pm and back down there first thing this morning - no thanks!  Went out to breakfast with BF, his bro and wife.  Home by noon.  I am beat, ended up napping for about a half an hour this afternoon.

Lizzie- hey Blondie!  I bet it looks great!!  Glad you had a nice lunch with the rents!

Sue - I can relate to your 10K experience, I had an awful race a couple of months ago. Glad today's run was good!!

Lisa - nice trail miles and OMG that burger sounds delish!!

Tessa - I prefer morning running, as well!!

Karen - glad you are having fun in Portland!

Damaris - have a good run and weights!

Sandy - glad you had fun with nephew, sounds like a good kid!  Oh boy on the friend's shagging dude, that would be a tough situation to get involved with, I am with you!

Ginny - sorry about the bad run, I have been having some awful ones, as well.  I need to get back into my routine.  7 is awesome though!

Diane - aww, sorry the race didn't go as planned.  20 miles is still awesome, especially in those conditions.  I was thinking about you last night at the casino, btw.  Since you are an auditor, do you have any interest in gambling?  I can handle it maybe a couple of times a year lol

Kupcakes - I am starting to think it is never going to warm up..!!

Diane-wonderful RR even if we want to crawl through the screen to give you a hug (but not one that hurts your back). It's always so tough because what works for one person isn't the same as what will work for another and we learn as we go what it is that does work. Back spasms are no joke. Seems like everything was going pretty well until after mile 17. They don't call it the wall for nothing. I know you weren't saying tiredness is what hit you but it could be a factor tying into core strength. Once you start to tire the form starts to go and things get pulled in ways they shouldn't if not properly supported. You got further with what seems like great spirits than most people and certainly much further than a half marathoner. I pushed through one marathon with low back pain and could barely walk for a couple of weeks.  Coincidentally, it was right after I stopped to use a porta potty. I think the sitting/squatting triggered the spasms in my back that day. Since then, I'm pretty darn reluctant to ever sit down during a race. Ever.  I almost ran all of Antelope with sand in my shoes but just before leaving the aid station at mile 30 I knew I had to empty them but did it as quickly as possible. I've had 3 DNF's. The real one that wasn't from time cutoffs or getting lost was because of low back pain at Afton in MN.  The downhills were what got me there. Continuing was not an option if I didn't want to be out of commission for weeks ahead. You were smart and listened to your body. We get stronger and smarter with every day.

HK2.0-It's super sunny here but cold. Such a weather tease.

Sue-I love social hour. LOL Mainly though when there are some introverts present. If all extroverts, I skip because I'm not extra extro. LOL

Sandy-well you can be a friend/acquaintance but I can only imagine what that guy must be going through. Not the same as being divorced, especially in a situation where it's been over except for the details for years. (my life-lol) There are still rib niggles but I think that the yoga is helping to keep things loose and I go really slow. LOL

Ginny-LOL You certainly sucked it up to get those miles done!

                  Damaris-hope the miles went well.

Went to an Ashtanga yoga class today. Someday I will be able to sit with my legs in front of me and bend forward. Today was not that day.

                    Hi ladies!

                    Rest day for me! Smile

Went and had lunch with my best friend. We have the kind of friendship that if we dont see each other for weeks - we just pick up right where we left off when we do. She has 2 small kids so her life is busy! I understand Smile It was good to see her and we had a 3 hour lunch. LOL. We call it our therapy sessions Smile After lunch I went to CVS to see if they have my darn GUM. Orbit Cinnamon gum has been my gum for years..well, Orbit discountinued it! Why, I dont know. I have tried other cinnamons and it just isnt the same. Anyway, CVS had the single packs up by the register..so I bought their entire stock. I spent $21 on gum. LOL. I guess I am passionate about it.

Hanging with my boys for the rest of the evening. Leftovers for dinner Smile Getting ready for a big work week. Lots going on including what the big wigs call - "Road Show". Where they come onsite and give us an 8 hour presentation about how our account is the best. Insert eye roll. Going to be a busy week! Lots of running this week, too Smile

Susan - Oh no!! I wonder why you felt so awful during the race. Did you eat enough? During my last marathon, I was feeling pretty dizzy the last couple miles. I was stuffing gummy bears in my mouth until the finish line. LOL. Trigger point roller…I am intrigued. Nice miles this morning.

Lisa - Holy crap. NICE miles. As Tessa said, a well deserved burger and beer. That burger sounds so good. Awe, I love what you said to Diane. You are so right - what works for one person doesn’t necessarily work for another. Glad the rib pain is only niggles now!

Tessa - Nice miles this morning! Laughing at your shagging comment.

Karen - Look at you extroverting!!! I am glad you are having a such a great time. Hope you had a good long run!!! Enjoy the site seeing!

Docket - Good luck on the miles! Pacfic Rim..hmm..I am with Sandy, is that a movie? Shows how much I know.

Sandy - Nice miles today! I won’t tell you our weather….nice of you to help your nephew Smile Wow, just 8 mo widowed? Hmm..how can he be ready to date?! That is awful. Oh, I can imagine that there isn’t much to see in Fargo - but thats just it - I am not used to that. My dad was telling me its super flat..I have never seen “flat” like he was describing. Does that make sense? Just excited to see a different area of the country - and meet YOU of course!! I hope the weather cooperates..I saw the average is 50’s and 60’s. Thats a little warm..but still pretty awesome considering that time in VA is 90’s. TOTALLY get being an awkward dater. I was/am too. When I was first dating HCBF he was a blabber mouth - which really helped actually haha. I also get being content with your life right now. Thats usually when something happens. Especially now that you are doing volleyball and possibly track. You’re putting yourself out there - that is not only HARD AS SHIT haha - but giving you a chance to meet new people. New people who might know a perfect match for you. Okay, I will stop. Smile OH OH let me know how the soup turns out. YUM.

Ginny - Ugh on the crappy run. Sorry Sad You stuck with it though - that is something to be proud of yourself for.

Diane - Oh Diane, I am so sorry that the race did not play out as you had planned. Like Margaret said on Facebook, epic things are hard. You made it 24 miles and that is something to be proud of! I agree with Run4kupcakes- if the first 20 miles were okay wonder if there is an imbalance somewhere. My back used to get REAL bad during a race once I hit 16 miles. Once I started adding in a lot of core work - I haven’t had an issue. Maybe with the head wind you were hunched over making it hurt more? Not sure. How is the pain today? It’s okay to cry. I cried after Houston!! Bad races are part of the program. We have to have them to appreciate the really good ones. You did the best you could! I hope you are still very proud of yourself! You did more than I would have! Congratulations!

Run4kupcakes - Wow, nice run today! Agree with what you said to Diane.

Laura - Nice miles! WTG on getting them done even though you were exhausted. Glad you had fun at the casino! I am with you - not my thing. I don’t want to lose all my money. I don’t even play the lottery. Though watching all these shows on HGTV called “my lottery dream home” really gives me the itch to start playing LOL. This 27 year old won 4 million on a SCRATCH OFF! What?!

Okay. Time to pack lunch and get dinner ready. Have a good night!

                    October 4 - Milwaukee, WI - 26.2

                    November 14 - Richmond, VA - 26.2

                    March 21 - Virginia Beach, VA - 26.2

                    Tessa

Diane, I'm sorry it didn't work out. I would agree that it may be a strength issue rather than damage. I'm wondering if your back started spasming because it is work to lean into a headwind like that, your body was working to hold you upright and keep you moving forward in conditions you could not train for. Volunteering after the race ended for you is admirable!

Karen, I heart Powell's. Enjoy! And good for you on the extroverting. Glad you got a run in, too.

Sandy, if you aren't interested, don't go for it. Widowhood, especially sudden, is something that can take a while to get over. Different from divorce though in some ways they are similar -- Lisa is also right that when the marriage has been over for some time it is like being widowed when the marriage is finally ended.

Susan, I think extroverting is something that has to be learned and a lot of people don't. And honestly aren't most runners introverts or at least comfortable with our own selves?

Waving to everyone else. 6.5 this morning before WW. I am up. Must get this under control...

                      Anonymous Guest

Diane, you are awesome. You've gotten some great advice/ideas from others so I don't really have much to add. I'm sorry the race didn't go like you'd hoped - stupid back. You will get this figured out and there will be other races.

Sandy, I usually get a cheap pizza (like Red Baron c (I think) for $3) from the grocery store and cook it, and while it's cooking I fry 4 eggs. Then just put on top of the pizza when done. There may be a better way to do it, but this works for us. And we both really like it.

Meeting was pretty short this morning, although I ended up down there for probably close to an hour after talking to the organizer of the Cypress group (she took over for the girl that got me into it). We just really clicked. Then I ran 14, ending at the Portland Saturday Market, and walked around there for awhile, then back to my hotel. We had talked about meeting up for dinner, but i am exhausted so texted her that she and her husband should go without me as I'm ordering room service and going to bed early. Tomorrow I will probably run a few miles, clean up and check out but leave my bags, and then head over to Forest Park for a little hiking, maybe the Japanese Gardens, etc. Last night I sat next to the organizer of Portland Fit and she said that was worth seeing/doing.

My room service is here! That was fast. I may get back on, but I may eat and fall asleep. Between meetings and extroverting and running and sightseeing, I am beat.

Diane, sorry about the tough race, but kudos nonetheless!  Hoping the back gets back to 100% soon.

                          Great job this weekend, ladies!

As part of the 2024 London Marathon, I am fundraising for VICTA, a charity that helps blind and visually impaired children. My mentor while in law school, Jim K (a blind attorney), has been a huge inspiration and an example of courage and perseverance. Please consider donating.
