Wet Wednesday (Over 40) (Read 17 times)

Building an ark here in Detroit.  As if we didn't have enough problems.

the water thing in Detroit, as you can imagine, is much different from media portrayals (damn media).  There has been a culture of non-payment that has been allowed to exist.  The city just now is putting teeth to saying if you don't make any arrangement it goes off.  Arrangement, not pay the whole thing off, just ask for help or make a payment arrangement.  Most are unoccupied homes that have had water left on for years.  The majority have set up plans after they received multiple notices. Ya got me started. sorry.  what happens elsewhere if you never pay for water service to your home?  for years?

Tessa-they had suggested it but we never saw him licking.  he's under close watch now and wearing cone.

Camille-there is a point where common sense does have to play in for ultras or any extreme sport.  sad for any life to be lost and that's why they have us sign that waver.  also why they are extreme and adventure sports.  the track record is just crazy.  talk about sensory deprivation!

    Judy-hope you knee feels better!

Damaris-dd is pretty close on a place.  she said midtown, 28th near Biscayne.  A new building.  Her current job is going to have her work remote on perm basis so she doesn't have to find a new job.  amazing how that is working out once they put pieces together and asked her point blank if she was looking.  Will make it easy to get that apt too.  XFit place that bf runs is just a couple of blocks from there.  the move is real.  so now I need to look at Miami and Houston area races.  if only money was there to get me to them.

I was too lazy to answer any calls from the freezer last night.  I guess that is good.  At work someone brought in cookies. Not as easy to skip.  I'm more of a cookie/bar person than ice cream too.  I think accessibility has something to do with it.

Lisa - Those pictures are incredible....wow!  Glad you weren't affected too much.  Just what Detroit needed Sad   Enjoy the Tigers!

Judy - I noticed there were 2 threads, so I just posted to the last one.  Thanks for the warning that you were going on vacation next week - so we won't worry!  glad you are resting some.

No run or anything yesterday. Had to go to a dinner.  Soooo, looks like I am changing jobs, I may need my head examined, but....my excuse is, I didn't apply for it.  The HR person sent my resume without my knowing before the job was approved, then she contacted me.  Anyhow, we just had a merger of sorts with U of Michigan hospital and they are bring 2 gyn specialists (oncology & urology) to our facility a few times a months.  So this position will be to help start this whole program......they wanted an NP with gyn experience.  Clinically will be not problem, but will be a challenge for me to develop this.  I work 3 days a week now, but will work 4 when this starts. Hmmmmm....am I crazy????

Hoping to get to trail tonight with RB.

        Good Morning!

4.2 windy miles this morning, it's actually been a few weeks since I've run in windy conditions (seemed like it was always windy this winter/spring).  Nothing yesterday, opted for sleep

Lisa - wow stay safe down there, we got rain but nothing like what you guys downstate had to deal with.

Carol - new job sounds great.  I am actually looking for a new gyn (my previous one doesn't take my new insurance) and I was thiking of going back to Midland.  If you get a chance, will you PM me the name of the doc(s) you work with or will work with.  I have Priority Health POS A insurance.

Off to work, it's almost my Friday yeah!!

        Docket_Rocket

Morning!  6 miles tonight (most likely with hubby) and PiYo Sweat.

Camille, the DVDs are pretty hard, even with the Pilates classes I am already doing.  I burn a lot of calories (compared to yoga and other stuff) with them.  Enjoy!

Lisa, Midtown is an up and coming area; however, I wouldn't run there at night.  But it has great restaurants and shopping areas; it just has not been developed well yet.  They just created that area to gentrify the ghettos around it.  But it is pretty safe.  Glad to hear it's working well for her.  We flood a lot but not as bad (unless there is a hurricane).  Ugh.

Bikerchick, sounds like a great challenge!

LC Runs, nice job on the run.

Hi!  18 mile ride this morning and blood draw for lab work.  Yearly w the gyn is next week.  He is pretty much my physician, so he has blood work drawn for review before my annual check up.

Lisa--hope things start to improve in Detroit soon

Lisa, those are impressive pics.  What a mess-poor people.  That's neat that dd can keep job-she must be a great employee.  Btw-my development in ga turns folks over to collection is they don't pay.  Not sure if they get cut off.  you are right about the adventure race. I guess they are lucky they made it so many years without a death. It's one of first ones.

carol, I think the job could be a great opportunity.  It was always the new things-starting new programs, learning new procedures, etc that kept me excited. I went from PT to full time for a couple years in my last job to start a new program and don't regret it.  I did get to job share later though.

demaris, I wouldn't want PiYo to be much harder. I go to lunch time because it's a little shorter. : )

              hi Laura and Sue!

I'm in Portland airport waiting for flight to Atl. I'm going to stay with my mom a few days.  She had a crisis a couple weeks ago-coughing up blood.  She's much better now.

First flight was at 2 am so my only exercise today will likely be a few more laps walking the  concourse.

So the last couple days I've waited until after I run to come here and post, and by then I'm so dang tired I just read a little and go to bed! Work has been crazy busy, trying to follow up on things from last week's meetings and still get things done before I leave town on Friday. Yesterday I was rearranging my training plan so I wouldn't have to do a long, hard run in the rain or on the TM (thunderstorms were predicted). Then the last of the rain that was supposed to hit right around 5 moved a little bit south and I was able to get my 11 (with 2x3 miles at MP-10) done with just a little drizzle. Even that stopped after a couple miles, and I ended up with a cool (70s!) humid run. After I noticed my PF that has been threatening since the ultra was flaring up, so heel cups are in shoes, much stretching is being done, and today, other than for this meeting I'm sitting in for a few hours, I'm wearing running shoes. With my dress and hose (because it's a meeting with members) - I look like a total dork. Tomorrow I go back to summer casual attire, which for me will be jeans and running shoes.

Lisa, very cool that DD's work will let her telecommute. Gives me hope for my future as well (there are companies out there that will do that, maybe mine is one). I think we got some of the rain yesterday that caused your flooding. DH saw that the long-term parking lot at BWI was flooded. That would suck to come back from a trip and your car won't start because it had been partially submerged. Another reason to park in the garage where I always park. On the seventh floor. Should be safe unless I see Noah wandering around at the airport.

Carol, that's exciting! I will say that when I am much happier now in my challenging job than I was in my last job, which had gotten to the point that I could practically do it in my sleep. More stress, yes, but more fulfillment.

Nice workouts for the rest of ya. I have a couple things that need to get done, so must stop personals for now. Will try again later. 5 easy for me after work (assuming foot is happy) followed by a Pilates class, since I will miss my private session this weekend.

                Camille, safe travels.

Run to live; live to run

Lisa I will hate to see what some of the roads look like when the water is gone won't be good

Karen nothing wrong with how you are dressed

Camilke safe flight.   Hope mom is okay

                  Judy hope vacation is good.

No no run today. I got up at 330 but hadn't slept well. Thought of running in a not very scenic area and one I hadn't run in before wasn't appealing today  I've had some very heavy training weeks. An extra day of rest with a minor cut back is probably a good idea.  Did training then drove 3.5 hours home.

so yesterday before I left I noticed a wasp nest being built in the eves way above the front door --- so second story. Wasps freak me out. I did use a long extension poll and destroyed some of it. I was far enough away I knew I could get in the garage very quickly. At least I'm not allergic. They didn't swarm but I didn't get the whole thing. Damn it. They are still there today. I hoped if I damaged it enough they'd leave. Nope. So I need to try again at sundown when they won't be as active. If that doesn't work I'll have to call an exterminator. Too close to the front door for my liking. Having to wait until Jan isn't what i want. Also odd to be making a nest in August. Dh has bad reactions to stings. He doesn't think he is allergic. But, he also hasn't been stung since he was young. So, we don't want to chance it. I thought it was mud dauber. But I can't tell since so far up. And looks too big. Maybe paper wasp.

                  Tessa

Lisa, re the water, in our area they bill monthly. If you miss one payment you get a nasty letter and a late fee. Miss two in succession and they will be out to turn off your water. If that happens it's a penalty fee and you need to pay the entire bill and possibly put down a deposit before they will turn it back on. And water is expensive here -- my bill routinely runs $75 to $100, though it's lower now we aren't watering as much and we don't have someone taking hour long showers. You wouldn't have someone not paying for years because they wouldn't HAVE service. And it's not like you can do without water easily. You can use candles (not safe!) for light and cook on a charcoal grill or eat fast food, but unless you want to tote buckets from somewhere for flushing, or install a portapotty in the yard, and carry jugs of water for cleaning and drinking, you need water. You know that.

We lose water after a major earthquake because our area is gravity fed. Water gets pumped into the tanks on top of the hill and then runs down to the houses, if there's no power the pumps go off and once the tank is empty that's it until the pumps are powered up and the tanks are full again. When the power goes out, especially because of a quake, one of the first orders of business is to fill the tub and as many buckets and jugs as possible so we have some water. I have bottled drinking water stored but not a lot of water for other purposes.

That storm looked horrible. Where did it come from?

                    How's the dog? Poor guy.

Carol, that sounds like an interesting opportunity! So you'd be setting up a program for patients with various gynecological issues?

Laura, rainy and windy is not fun to run in, glad you are at least getting a break from the wind.

Damaris, 6 and PiYo? That sounds like a good all-around workout.

Susan, makes sense to have you go in for bloodwork before the doctor visit. I had to go in fasting last week and have blood drawn after the checkup, and I was starving by the time we'd finished.

Camille, sorry to hear about your mum. Hope she is better soon. I presume flying from Alaska to GA is an all day trip, especially with the amount of time you lose flying east?

Karen, what's wrong with running shoes with a dress and hose? I do that most mornings. I do change my shoes in the office, though. Good that you managed to get that run in. Ouch on the long term lot being submerged. That's almost worse than the UCLA parking structure that DWP flooded a week ago. The Times reported that nearly 300 cars were totaled.

Marjorie, you are right, the roads will not be good after the rain. Did you see Long Island had 13 inches of rain in some parts?

Wasps? Don't mess around. Call the exterminator. They are nasty persistent vicious little buggers. And there is absolutely no reason for a lot of them. They don't make honey, they don't pollinate plants, they don't have any value as far as I can see.

3.5 this morning, then 7.11 at lunch. I have been eating a lot this week and need to pull back.

Pilates kicked my butt. This was an intermediate class, and I've only been doing this stuff for a couple months,so there was a lot new for me. And it moved fast! Luckily it was taught by my instructor who knows what I've done and what I can do, so a couple times had me doing different stuff than the other three. Even though I fell behind a few times, I did notice that my form was really good compared to a couple of the others, so I think the private sessions are a good idea. I am going to have sore abs and glutes tomorrow, I'm afraid.

Exhausted and going to bed soon. Tomorrow is going to be a busy day at work (vacation starting Friday). I think I may have volunteered to take my work computer and work an hour or so a day while I'm gone. In addition to my regular job, I handle all the meeting registrations and next week is the last week to register for our fall meeting before the price increase, so I'll probably be getting a lot of email with registrations and questions while I'm out.
