This was a PR performance for me, one that for once I am very satisfied with.
This race was coming off of a 68 mile week (my highest in a year) which was essentially all easy miles with very little speed work the past month. Still, I felt my chances to have a good race were pretty good as I am feeling as healthy as ever.
This was a point to point event where you are bussed to the start, there is a net elevation loss so I knew I just needed to hang tough once the distress kicked in and I would have a good finish time.
It was just after mile 3 where I began asking WTF was I doing out there, and I would have given anyone 100 hundred dollars to drive onto the course and hit me at that point!
No one did, and for that I had to really dig deep to keep from letting such a great first half of the race fall in vein.
It was all I could do to keep my pace on the east side of 6:30 during that 5th mile, where for awhile I was running at 6:38.
I know there are many who do not use the Garmin for pace corrections during a race but I am not at the point where I can become one of them yet.
As it were I fought back and finished strong, and now have set myself up for a possible run at a 6:30 half marathon later this summer. Or pretty damn close to it.
