Notes

Ran the 2014 Boston Marathon. Wore SmartWool calf compression sleeves. Socks I wore, Thorlos, didn't work out well with all the hills. Bunched up. Got blisters on both feet.

The hills were very challenging. It seemed like I was always going uphill or downhill. My quads were toast by about mile 15 or 16. Dan Hansen ran with me till about then. I slowed down to around 9:00/mile pace and he just couldn't go that slow. He ran about 3:35.

Cramping on sides of legs, down low, near the ankle. Similar to what happened in TCM the first time I ran it. This time I recognized what was happening. Sometimes I was able to change my gait and it went away, sometimes I had to walk for a little bit.

I took in plenty of fluids and nutrition. I didn't hit the wall - my muscles (quads) just couldn't handle the work. I didn't feel as fresh and energized at the start as I did last year. Maybe I wasn't fully recovered / tapered. Could have been the easy runs on hills at Dave Hardin's house the two days before.

Can't complain though. I've run Boston :) The crowds were awesome - late in the race when I had slowed down I ran a lot at the curb giving high fives. The kids loved it, and so did the adults!

Our shirts with our names worked great. Lots of personalized cheering!
