Shamrock Shuffle 2019. 26:09.11 by my watch (26:14 gun time), 117th.

Winner Joe Moore (KC Smoke) - 23:18

Proud and happy with everything about this race except the time. The fourth mile maybe could've been a bit faster, but at that point I was just competing and I didn't lose any ground on the pack I was running with so I'm ok with it. It's just too bad that fitness puts me at a 26:09 8k right now. It's pretty evident mileage for me is maybe the most important piece of quality training, so I'm excited to get back to the off season after Christie to try and put up some big totals each week. What really helped I think was before the gun went off, I just mentally put myself at mile 8 of Christie. I was just running the final 5 miles of it during Shamrock. That helped a lot when I started hurting in the 3rd/4th miles since I was thinking, "Yeah you're pretty late in a half marathon, it should be pretty painful." It also kept me from worrying whatsoever about splits because no matter what they would be, it'd be faster than half marathon pace.

Going in I just wanted to come through the mile pretty relaxed, about 5:20. Which I ran exactly. The second mile I got moving a bit too strong since I was already beginning to pass a lot of people, I should've tried to just inch it down instead of getting carried away. But it was a nice confidence boost seeing a 5:07 and still feeling good. Third mile I was just wanting to maintain, I knew I probably wouldn't get any faster than 5:0Xs so maintaining sounded nice. But the pack I was with/the people we were passing were slowing so maintaining my position and competing went really well, but we weren't really pushing it. Fourth mile was def the longest feeling and slowest of the race. I was just trying to keep with the pack and not lose them, which was pretty tough and I was rubber-banding a lot. Surged by and got passed by the same people throughout the whole mile. Fifth mile flew by and the highlight was pushing up the only incline in the race right before the finish. I hammered up it and passed everyone with 5-7 seconds of me as everyone was going backwards at the point. I knew if I pressed hard up that piece, seeing the finish line would carry me through however back it would hurt at the top. Rounded the last turn and started pressing for home but I couldn't really get sprinting, I was just running really strong. Felt like if I went much deeper I might throw up, but kept pressing as best I could. For some reason I glanced over my shoulder a few times coming into the finish, and I'm not sure why really. It wasn't like I was fighting for a top spot, but I did anyway. Got passed maybe a yard or two from the line by a DW Running dude, so that kinda sucks but whatever. Really happy with how I competed today actually, I dug through some pretty tough spots and hardly was passed at all throughout the race. Of all the people who ran their first mile in 5:20, I gotta be one of the first couple across the line lol It's just too bad that after working since like October of last year I can only muster up a 26-low. I really thought I was gonna run like 27 minutes today though, so at least I beat that. Hopefully next year I can knock off a good chunk of time. Pretty disappointing that on a course known for crazy fast times, I've managed a pair 26 minute+ 8ks.

Other results: Dan O'Keefe (24:06) / Mitch Gilbert (24:57) / Bobby Mette (27:58) / Kaytlin Gilbert (30:11) / Landon Vowels (31:42) / Drew Knipfer (33:02) / Kevin Jackman (47:21)
