Notes

First mile race ever. It was getting pretty crowded at the start, but some nice lady let me jump ahead of her so I ended up right beside the person I wanted to be beside.

The other night Nic told me not to look at my watch, so I just set the display to just lap time just like when I'm on the track, and I set the thing to autolap every .25. Kirill told me it was a gentle decline to start, but that was quite the drop that I was slightly cursing at. I went through in 73 and though excited, was discouraged to see Nic dropped out and gave me a cheer. A tad quick, but explained by that drop and some excitement. The two I was chasing started to get away from me (to be honest, I had no business going out with them since they both ran Boston in something like 2:43 or 2:44 ;-)), and it was hard work. We turned onto the main road, and this is where most of the crowd was, since it was just a block for them to see us again at the finish. We made a couple of turns, and my watch vibrated with an 80. I had no idea if that was .5 mile or .75 mile, but then I saw the finish line and started kicking like mad. I was actually starting to close on those 2, but ran out of room and finished 2 and 4 seconds back. I probably left a bit of time out there on those middle 2, but I'm also told those are the toughest. I'm pretty impressed wit myself, especially with no prior mile experience.

I'm super surprised and excited with this result, especially with not much mile training. Maybe I'm more built for speed? I spoke to Nic after, and we were comparing my finish time to the total of my 2 800s the other night (he said we should be able to finish within 10s if we were able to hold the pace for the final 2 sets). I guess that was a good predictor. That was a super-fun event, and I'm glad to see so many fast people out, making this the fastest year in its 23-year history.

Time to start gearing up for those 5 and 10ks.
