Notes

Marine Corps historic half marathon in Fredericksburg, VA. Official time 1:46:09. 60th in my age group out of 469. Look at those splits. Again, I went out too fast and died, this time in two stages: first, miles 6-8 dropped to the pace I should have started at; then, beginning at mile 9, I just went to pot, *before the big hills*. So I can't blame the hills entirely for this time. A week ago today, I ran 12 miles at this average pace, but I started much slower and ran the second half considerably faster, and I had much more fuel left in the tank than I did after the race (and during the second half of the race) today. That said, this was a tough course. It was hilly throughout. Until mile 10, most miles involved overall descents. But still, there was a lot of up and down. And starting at mile 10 there were some really killer hills. This is not a PR course, but I can run it faster next time around by PACING myself better from the beginning. To run and train for a full marathon, I absolutely need to learn that lesson. Just pick your target pace and run it from the beginning. Period.
