SOME Trot for Hunger on Thanksgiving at Freedom Plaza. Fast course with no hills - only some turns and one turnaround to slow one down. I forgot to change the autolap setting on Garmin, so my splits are quarter miles. My mile splits are (1) 5:53, (2) 6:13, and (3) 6:20. Obviously that first mile was a bit too fast, mainly the first 400m. Who knows how much damage that did? Undoubtedly some, but it's hard to tell how much since the effects could be the same as just not being in great 5k shape. I did feel good in some ways at some times - flashes of my old self that I didn't feel in my other two 5k's since the marathon. But they were just flashes. I'd feel good for a while running around 6:00 pace, then look at my watch a bit later and notice that I was struggling at 6:20 pace. Then I'd pull it back together for a bit only for things to fall apart again shortly after. And things stayed fallen apart for the third mile. So it's beginning to come together but isn't there yet. This is, however, somehow my fastest 5k except for the two under 19 minutes. So perhaps I'll get back under 19 next time? By the way, I tried eating a bagel this morning about 2 hours before the race, but my stomach was uncomfortable. So I'll return to just a banana and gel in the future. If I need more in the tank, then put more gel in it.
