Spaceman 50K

Notes

Started at the Atomic Koi in Fitchburg to run up to Monona Terrace, then turned around a bit after the Sun sign. There's a scale (ish?) model of the solar system that starts there and finishes in Mt. Horeb, so with the additional 7 and a half from starting in Fitchburg, I got the full 50K. The bike path was good until Verona (mile 20ish) and then it turns into rutted dirt, which was not great with the rain. Happily, I avoided the hardest rain until mile 27. Unhappily, I did hear thunder at mile 29.5 - but at that point, I was actually in Mt. Horeb proper, so I didn't really care. Kind of light traffic across the board, but I did see one of the people that I've run with one or two times. Didn't recognize him in time and didn't really acknowledge each other, but shh, it counts.

Ran wearing adidas Boston 8s, which are good, but do chew up my feet a touch on everything over 20. But that would have happened in the heavy mist that we were getting today. Long sleeves and shorts, which was touch and go at points, especially when the tailwind (yay point to point with tailwind!) shifted slightly. Ended up eating five GUs - blackberry, smores (thanks Abe - not that this was one from that package still, but I like the smores), mint chocolate, vanilla, and chocolate (was a struggle - which surprises me, since I'm normally pretty good with chocolate.) Also had a liter of water, which was not enough. I thought that I was going to be able to refill in Verona, but no dice - the bubbler was not on.

Fastest mile was mile 1 (!) at 7:25; 17 sub 8; 5 sub 9; 9 9 plus (mile 21 to 30 - see I don't know how to run a 50K). Slowest mile was mile 27 at 10:38. Lots of walk breaks; didn't really want to try running and eating again since, again, the speed isn't really the big point here.

So yeah. Fun run, over 40,000 steps, and the second longest run ever by time!
