Training plan called for 6 x 1200m intervals. Whoa. That's 4.5 miles worth of intervals in preparation for a 5K? Are you kidding me? I decided that I wanted my intervals to be at under an 8min/mile pace - or under 6:00. This would put me at the pace of a sub-25:00 5K which would be a new PR for me. I went to QOHS track - I got there a bit later than I wanted to, so I was hoping I did not have to contend with students' gym class on the track. My first 4 intervals were 5:46, 5:47, 5:46 and 5:39. After that I was pretty much out of steam. Plus on the fourth interval I was breathing really hard...I don't want to push so hard that I get sick again. The 5th interval was 5:58 which was still under 6 minutes but slower than the first four. At that point, the first gym period started filtering onto the track. As I started interval number 6, one of the students started "chasing" me around the track. I kept to my pace and the guy eventually stopped (I tired him out?). As I came around at 800m, I saw the student about 100m ahead of me again. I knew that if I ran that last lap that they would start to chase me again - and perhaps the teachers would wave me off the track (how many times will I get waved off of a track this month???). So I decided to quick the last interval after 800m - I hit that in 4:09 which was slower than the pace I was hoping to keep. I was dead tired. I'll definitely try to hit the sack early tonight!
