Back down the hill I went, with a bottle of water. I met Nye way back past the mud, at the fence, almost a mile in. He was walking and feeling pretty low. I coached him back to a run, giving him prompts to relax and drop the pressures he'd felt. Before the race all he could talk about was who'd beat him and who he'd try to beat, and he psyched himself out. I had to tell him to walk while we briefly talked about this, and when he ran again he didn't stop till the last hill. He even gave a little sprint at the finish, about 42 minutes I think, not sure. The time wasn't important anymore. He was an official finisher of his first 3 mile race.
