Perfect Run!

Tonight's workout is why I run. I got home late last night from adventuring with Nate and didn't get to sleep until around 1:30am. I was super tired all day and got home from work round 4. I read part of Marathon Man where Bill Rodgers is talking about the joy of running with teammates. I fell asleep and got a 1.5 hour nap in. Woke up feeling super refreshed and ready to go. Out the door around 7:30 for standard 2.5 mile warm up to track, then 4, 8, 12, 16 x 2 with 400m jog b/w intervals.

There was a soccer game going on when I started and it was already dark so it kind of felt like a bit of a secret workout hidden in the shadows of the track. During halftime a few folks wandered over to the track and an older couple tried running a 200. They were about to start when they saw me and the woman said "He looks serious". They stayed on the track after and cheered for me during the 2nd 1200. It felt awesome. I had already hit 73 and 2:23 for the two previous intervals without even trying. I just felt so light and cruised through the 12 in 3:34. This felt too easy and I decided I'd just stay even and focused on the last 16, but secretly I wanted to just let loose and go for it. I jogged into the last interval and tried holding back but just felt too good. I went through the 8 in 2:23 and wasn't fatigued at all. A soccer ball got kicked over and Sage wound up retrieving it. He cheered me on for the last lap and gave me a high five. I felt invincible and closed in 68.

When I finished I just kind of hung out on the track and stretched. Even though we were of two worlds I felt camaraderie that Bill Rodgers was describing with the energy from the soccer stands. I'll probably be sore/tired tomorrow but why not? What fun it is to run.
