What my watch says: 5:40, 5:42, 5:08, 5:44, 5:36, 22 (.08). I think what happened was that my watch accelerated through .1 during the 3rd mile, so probably more realistic that it was around 5:30.
Now that the formalities are out of the way, here are my race thoughts. Today was ok. To be honest, I was pretty tired going into this and had an overall lack of enthusiasm for doing this race. While I started my watch, I did not look at it during the race, however, that did not prevent me from getting too caught up in looking at the clocks posted on the course. Mile 1 said 5:50 and instead of just saying to myself, "Well, that is because I started 10-15 seconds after the gun," I said to myself, "Dang, 5:50 feels hard today." I'd say that sums up my attitude towards today.
Yes, I accomplished the basic tenets of a good race (run evenly, in fact negatively, pass people the whole time, close tough), I do not think I was ready to commit to putting myself through a tough race today and that was a disappointing realization. These are the days when you have to focus on being tough (especially if I'm to do that in 6 weeks for a marathon).
Anyways, after the first 5k (17:40), I was really only passed by one or two people. I caught John shortly after 5K and caught Emma right before the 4 mile. I saw Kelsey a good ways off, but tried closing the gap on her which ended up fruitless. I did catch Emma's friend right before the finish line.
Heel hurt a good deal after the race, but better now as well. Will look to hammer out a long run next weekend and get back on track to running a good marathon. Good seeing everyone today and a good week of training overall.
