Notes

Just a chance to re-visit things. I am very pleased with the results of my training since October. I was worried then that after the few days off after the marathon and with the continuing knee pain, I might not be ready for a long, steady increase in miles. I think continued core, mobility, and an emphasis on static stretching (particularly adding in hip flexor and sartorious stretching helped with my knees). During this time training, I did the most mileage in a week (over 70) and I was over 60 for many of the weeks. Having a strong base really helped. I think learning how to transition between phases of training was beneficial (starting with stead-state, moving to threshold and then coming in with the 1Ks). If I could do one thing maybe a little different, I may have extended the speed endurance phase with the 1ks. Jordan mentioned a while ago thinking about plateauing at a certain number of 1ks at a certain pace and then dropping the number later. I might think about something like this. I think the long runs I did with Brandon were super key in my training. Those killed me, but I really gained a lot of aerobic strength and in training for the half-marathon, I am going to follow the same model.

The last month got a little wonky. I got distracted from my goal for a couple weeks, I got sick which hurt the efficiency of my peak. I think the main thing I would have done differently would have been to add in the 3K at GVSU. I think the experience from running that would have gone a long way for me.

The fact that I just missed breaking 9 in my debut 3k sucks, but I am pleased overall. I really enjoyed running this race. I think if I work and stay focused I can do it faster next year, but I won't get caught up in that. I really am happy with where I am at with my running. I have showed a renewed commitment to the lifestyle I love and this is what got me through the tough times in the fall. I would really like to be able to hop into 5k workouts with Joe and Henry and Cobert, but we'll see what the schedule looks like.
