Notes

As of today, 2/14/2009, and not counting my track races (mile or less), this was the best race I have ever ran in my life. Not a bad start since joining FFRT. And the cool part is when I thought I had nothing left at the end, when I say Don and the folks near the finish line cheering me on, it turned out I still had a sprint left. That's the mental aspect of racing that I'm learning since joining the team. I can be faster, I just give up too easy because I don't know how to manage pain and discomfort. Today was still 95% effort, but that's better than 90%.

I started out a little faster than I expected because I was feeling excited. By mile one I finally caught to a D member (dangit, forgot his name again) and we were at 7:08. He said less than a 5k to go so I kept going. Even though I was breaking way the few short slopes slowed us all down and I started picking people off one by one. I was still feeling good by mile 3 and passed a couple of other D members but I noticed I was right on target for 7:15 pace. Then I passed a couple of other big guys and they stayed on my heels. That sped me up a bit and I'm starting to hurt. Then I passed a young kid who was struggling so I told him good job and to jog it out. he became my pacer for the rest of the race. With a quarter mile to go I'm feeling bad (this is where my woosness kicks in) so I told my new pacer to pick it up and bring me in. He proceeds to leave me in the dust. The other two big men who were on my heels are now starting to make their move too. That's when I saw the other Fleet Feet members and they are cheering me on. And suddenly, thought I was done for, I'm sprinting again and retake my postion. When I saw the 28:25 on the clock I was overwhelmed with excitement and ran as fast as I could for the finish line, finishing at an unofficial 28:48, 12 seconds from an already ambitions 29:00 goal. Just to have broken 30 minutes would have been a good race, but Coach Chad told me there was no reason I couldn't run a 7:15. Talk about a challenge!!! I'm so excited by what is to come this year with this team, but I'm also nervous because it's going to be hard work.

Nike shoes were awesome, stride was awesome, the thin socks were awesome. Got the arms moving in the last mile like that the guy told me to do last week when I was finishing the Stampede. The paces were all over the place because of the slope placement, but ending with a fast mile makes think that this was a well paced race.
