4/15/12 update: THis is the first of two times I ran this strategy, though this race it wasn't exactly planned. I remembered I was either beat up, or just out of shape from lack of training. So I coaxed on the first half, but was feeling good on the second and picked it up. I remembered feeling like I raced it by the end, but at this time I was comparing my results to much faster times on the 5k, Half, and Eugene Marathon, and didn't thing much of this race. However, this is now my third fastest 10k. I don't pace 10k's well, and it seems that I do better with a conservative first half, and picking it up at the 4 mile mark. I did the same thing today and beat this time. I had a slower second half, but I had a faster first half, and on a bum ankle. I think I may have found my new strategy for how to race 10k's, but I think a minute difference between the 5k halves is a little much. maybe next time try 30 seconds.
