Notes

The closer we got to this the worse the forecast got. The 3:12 goal we set all of a sudden seemed like a serious challenge.

Started with Kevin and Mike and ran together until 15.5. Temps rose from over 70 to over 80 in that time. The sun was out the entire race. We plugged along on pace but the heat made it aggressive. I took 2-3 cups of water from every table, always dumping one on my chest to stay cool. By the top of Battery it became obvious that finishing the race at sub 7:20 pace wasn't gonna happen with the temp still on the rise. At that point we made it a long run but 7:45 pace didn't feel any better. We stopped a few times for a leg stretch, water, or bathroom. When we moved it was always running about 7:45 pace.

It was mid 80s, humid and hazy for the last 10K. At mile 22 I asked some folks for a beer and they fetched a PBR Tallboy, which I chugged. It was COLD and probably kept me cool and hydrated for the rest of the race. We paced it in and were done. Had a massage and I think it helped. A little over a half hour after we finished they shut the race down. Probably 2/3s didn't get a time. It was that bad.

In the end I think the heat approached what we had at Boston in 2012. It was warmer at the start this year at VCM but the temp peaked a little higher at the 2012 Boston. I certainly handled it a lot better at VCM.
