Notes

Hmm, bit of a disaster. Hurt my back (again) a week ago so was not sure if I would do this race. In the morning I felt pain in the back when I sneezed so I went out for a quick run to see if it was even possible. It went ok so I went for it.

In hindsight I don't think I ate enough beforehand especially given the relatively warm weather. On the start line my heart rate was already high. I hoped it was nerves. I was in two minds as to whether I should go get more to eat in the 30mins before the race but decided against it.

Once the race started I felt ok and was going well but I could see that the heart rate was really high even if I felt ok. Tried to slow it down and keep to the shade but as is clear from the a splits above it hovered at 180 for a long time. I drank at every water stop as I was concerned that I would run out of energy.

10km: 45:52

Got to 10km in Kungsholmen record time but felt the heat. I pushed on and reached 17km where I was on target for 1:38-1:39 - a massive PB. I could see from the PerfectPace watch setting that I only needed 5:01/km for the remaining 4km to be sub 1:40:00. Thought it was in the bag but I broke down on the hill up to Krinstineberg.

I pushed too hard given the setting. I tried to run again a number of times but a combination of wooziness (that's a first) and cramp in both legs put paid to that. I walked most of the next 3km and I was struggling badly at times to walk straight. I did manage to run the last km and at an okay pace but by then the race was ruined.

Lessons learned! Nutrition and more long runs required!
