Notes

Fredericton Marathon.

Great race. Wanted to qualify for Boston but wasn't sure if I could pull off the 3:04:59 qualifier. Decided to pace myself at 4:23/km (for 3:04:40) and see what happened. Talked to John Holt at the start line, he was hoping to run a sub 1:29:00 half, so I wasn't going to try to keep up. The first half went really smooth, crossed the half point at 1:32:08 feeling great, so I had a minute in the bank. Two guys passed me just before half and slowly pulled away.

Started to feel the decline starting at about 26k, not bad yet, but I knew it was coming. With 16k left the first place the first place woman slowly passed me, I told her she was first, she hoped she could hold on and slowly took off. What a run! Felt pretty good at 32k, but my pace started to falter, not too much, but if it dropped much more I wouldn't make 3:04:59. I passed one of the two guys that passed me at the half, he was really starting to slow. "Now the fun starts!" I told him as I passed.

At km 37 I really started to hurt and my pace faltered more, it was going to be close. After this point all I could muster in response to encouragement from volunteers was loud grunts.

I tried to pick up the pace in the last 2k, but my legs wouldn't comply, the pace had taken its toll. I knew I was going to miss it by about 2 minutes, damn! Oh well, not too bad for not sharpening for the race properly. Crossed the finish line in 3:06:37, a PR by just under 12 minutes, good stuff, but I missed the Boston qualifier. Oh well, I'll get it next year, the time goes up to 3:10:00. My stomach was a bit off the whole time, when I drank I could feel the water/gatorade sloshing around. I also had to pee the entire time. These things didn't help, but probably didn't slow me down much.

Got home and checked the official results and there was an asterisk next to my name...Checked the BAA website and it turns out that the qualifying time is based on you age as of the 2016 Boston Marathon, so it turns out I qualified. Yay! Now to sign up.
