Notes

The Champaign County July 4th 5K went well! I placed 11th overall with a 17:49.8 and 3rd in my age group, nabbing a medal. I warmed up and prepped for the race like I would any other competitive event and that felt good, though by the time we lined up the cloud cover disappeared. From the start I knew I was gonna push myself and I sure did with a 5:28 first mile. The small hills on Lincoln, the cumulating heat, and that terrible 180-degree turn were rough on me and led to a 5:56 mile. By the last straightaway on Florida/Kirby I was just trying not to hyperventilate, and mile 3 was a 5:59. I finished pretty strong; as can be seen with my apparent 4:39 pace on the last 0.1mi, I had some strength still in me to drop perhaps five seconds and a place but I was suffering enough as it was so that's fine.

This is my best time (and first under a 6 min/mile pace) since my high school XC peak; my average pace was 5:45 which hit my target race pace right on the head. With only about a month of serious distance training (or at least my attempt at it) under my legs, the far-from-ideal conditions, and not having run a legit 5K in 11 months, I'm pretty happy with the outcome.
