Notes

5K for the Run Free Grand Prix.

Originally intended to start around 8:30 but all my shorts were in the dryer which didn't dry them for reason despite me starting the cycle before bed. Didn't realize this until after 8, so I started a new cycle and folded other laundry and cleaned my room a bit. By the time I got going it was in the low 50s and sunny rather than low 40s and overcast, which wasn't ideal but ended up being totally fine.

Did a 2 minute tempo just to get extra warm, plus a realllll easy stride after re-tying my flats and then didn't waste any time getting going. Went out a little fast like I figured I would, but settled in well running just under 80 basically every lap. Splits for 1600s were 5:16.5, 5:17.8, 5:14.9, 33. I felt great through the first mile but probably stayed a bit too relaxed in the middle mile before having to work in the last mile a bit. I thought I was going to get under 16:20 but just missed it.

Over all, pretty happy with how this went. I wanted to beat Kyle's time (16:12) but didn't quite have the guts to work the middle as much as I would have needed. Still a really good effort and my 4th fastest 5K ever by a solid margin, the only faster ones were during outdoor track senior year. I think with competition and a cooler day I could get 16 low if not under 16. Could be a good goal for the spring or early summer.

I stayed away from spikes since they didn't feel good at all when I wore them for the mile a couple weeks ago, and that was the right move. I don't really think spikes are a huge advantage at this pace, and having not worn them much lately they might just feel weird and possibly beat me up.

It felt so good to just lie on the track for a minute after finishing.
