Well dammit.

I know my cold definitely played a role in this but coach is right, ultimately I'm not as strong as I thought right now. Gotta get serious again with tempos and economy-type interval workouts. I think a quality 5k will have to wait until outdoor, it's obvious I have a lot of work to do before I'm back to that kind of shape. Apparently my mile shape is better now but I'm going to have to run a redemption 3k soon too, but not until after some work. It's been an iffy couple of weeks of training, mileage, etc. Just gotta get back into it.

I'm happy with how I ran up until I imploded. Race went out fast but stuck back with Brian and came around in like 34. Found a good pace and came through 1600 in 4:46, maybe just under. Started out in back but moved up as needed, and I think I did a good job of positioning myself, closing gaps, etc. That's about all the good stuff in the race, in that first mile. Tried to maintain, but lost focus in the next two laps, came around 2k in around 6:02. From there, just pain. Last 4/5 laps close to 5:20 pace. Yuck, not acceptable.

I had a feeling I'd slow down in the second half when I'd need those lungs to start working, just based on the past couple of days with this cold. But jeez, shit-tastic. Again, as much as I'd like to blame it on the cold, that's mostly a strength problem. Realistically, healthy Paul wasn't running 8:55 today, not with the past two weeks of running. Hope I didn't embarrass myself too much. At least I'm not Mike Schram...

GET BACK ON THAT MF HORSE

Edit: little bit of post bad race depression there, have had some quality workouts in the past week and I'm still in good shape, just gotta get more quality days and more consistency in there

You are in good shape. And you are the opposite of Mike Schram haha... Think of it this way now that you are a post collegiate...

Every 14 days you want at least a solid tempo and a solid rep workout at mile pace with full recovery along with 1-2 intervals/fartleks spread out 5-7 days apart.

Body needs 24 hours to recover from moderate tempo, 48 hours from a hard tempo, 24-48 hours for a rep workouts and 48-72 hours for a race or hard interval workout.

Thanks that's some great info. Going to work on setting up an actual structured training plan now

If you want to work on a specific quality spend 4-6 weeks doing it once every 5 to 7 days.

Always save the hardest phase for write before a racing block you want to do well in

Paul Malek

A specific quality, as in like endurance through tempos or something?

J_M_L

Yeah, start with a workout yo can complete and each one should be a little more challenging or at least the same.
