- Night Before -

Did strength circuits at gym, then did about 2 miles on treadmill, at varying but easy paces. Ate pasta at Ruby's after that.

- Morning, before race -

7:00 Ate malted meal, yogurt, strawberry-orange-banana juice, water. That diet apparently worked well. Physically felt good, not especially nervous. 26 degrees and breezy. I wore purple tshirt outside of grey sweatshirt, and my long pants. I think it helped me stand out in the crowd.

8:00 Met Carol & Ginger at Kohl's, walked together to SF. Felt somewhat but not badly rushed due to taking WAD to work and meeting everyone. No pre-race meditation. It would have been a good idea to tie my shoes more carefully.

- Miles 1-3 -

Slow, due to crowd, but I felt this was a good thing. No complaints from knees or feet. Actually had to remind myself to initiate breathing cadence, since I didn't feel any need for additional air. Once on the trail I had a bit more freedom to find my own pace, but still had to slow down now and then until it was safe to pass. Kept it comfortably slow.

- Miles 4-6 -

Walton seemed to come quickly. Not feeling fatigue, and most importantly, right hamstring, instead of issuing threats, was saying I'm strong and I'm your friend. Took off gloves during mile 5 since my hands were getting hot. After the turnaround, I knew I had plenty of reserves, so I picked up the pace, passed more people, and ran more like I do in training.

- Miles 7-10 -

My legs didn't start to tell me this was enough until about mile 8. I didn't push really hard, thinking I want something left for mile 10. Back at the trailhead, the even, firm feel of the concrete was good, but there was a little nostalgia for the limestone. Nice to have encouraging yells from Joel on my strong finish on the lap around SF. Official chip time - 1:32:04.

- After -

Something of a lack of shouting crowds, no doubt due to the weather. Went inside, got my pack, chatted with Carol and her friend (Ann?) for a while. Carol was very happy with her 5K time. Didn't want to stand still too long, so went out and walked around the building once. Saw Dave J. but none of the other LI-COR crew. Line for fruit & bagels was too long, so walked back to car with Carol.

- Post Race Impressions -

This race was easier than expected. Hardly even worked up a sweat. It really went exactly as I had hoped. Coming off the hamstring injury, I just intended to run without pushing. I have no regrets about my pace, because it's a PR no matter what. Furthermore, I have no prior experience to gauge on, so it's best to not overdo it. Happy with my performance.

- Biggest Casualties -

Little toes. For some reason, I didn't get shoes tied particularly tight, but I was completely unaware that toes were getting beat up. Also, left middle toe surprised me with a bit blood on it. It doesn't hurt at all. Outsides of knees feel put-upon when I walk; not so much pain as having been unaccustomed to that much work.
