Ginger, Carol, and Dave Franzen were in the race, too. We were concerned(?) about rain, but it stopped for the duration of the race. Actually, I'm a wee bit sorry; I might have enjoyed running in the rain.

I had Noodles & Co. pasta w/chicken the night before. It might have been a bit too much, but I can't really complain. Race morning I had Malted Meal, juice, and a little bit of yogurt. I think less MM and more yogurt might have been better.

Had long pants & rain jacket, but wisely decided to shed them before the race.

At the gun, the slow pace and downhill slant made a nice warmup. The much wider running area than State Farm made passing pretty easy. I did not hold back like I did at SF, and did a little jockeying for position during the first mile. Passed lots of people, based only on what was a comfortable stride for me. I'm now feeling the advantage of my long legs - stretching my stride a bit really puts me ahead without a lot more energy expenditure. So, my tempo is slower than a lot of people who I'm passing. Also noticed that my controlled 2-2 breathing cadence seems helpful. Some others were breathing more rapidly and shallowly than I.

During mile 2, chatted briefly with a guy who asked if I really did RAGBRAI (I was wearing my RAGBRAI jersey). There was water at the halfway point, and I took a cup on the spur of the moment - I wasn't sure I had drunk enough beforehand. Probably shouldn't worry; the drink isn't going to do any good with just three miles left. Drank it running.

On 56th, the prospect of running up Peanut Hill was a little daunting. Along there we began encountering the elite runners on their way back. I cheered them on as I ran.

Didn't have nearly as much trouble on the hill as my self-doubt had been predicting, and the turnaround came sooner than I expected. Passed more people as I extended my stride on the downhill.

Heading east again toward the lake, I was back on my old running grounds, and still felt pretty strong, with a good dose of tiredness mixed in. Running up Normal on what I had earlier named Heartbreak Hill again was not the grueling stretch that the self-doubt had suggested, then down Holmes drive on the home stretch allowed me to stretch my stride. Got cheers from Carol as I neared the finish. Felt good at the end; sweaty but not exhausted.

Post-race, knees feel fine(!!), leg and foot muscles a bit tired, but good-tired. Feel very good about the race.

One of these days I'll learn to get my official time at the finish line. Now I have to wait a few hours.
