A perfect morning for running. Met up with Brent, Jamie, and Alicia before the race. After the race, learned that Sean P ran it, too. Sean J was there as spectator; met his wife Lisa. Also said hi to Sue W.

I was nervous about running this far on blacktop, and about running this many hills, neither of which I had done in practice. In my pre-race walking around and warmup jogging, it didn't feel too bad, but I was worried that my competitive urge might trump my good sense. I wasn't worried about my cardio fitness; five miles is a pretty short distance for me now.

When the gun went off, I made a conscious effort to keep my stride short and to keep my cadence fast. I gave no thought to favoring my left ankle, which was probably good. The feel of the asphalt varied, of course, but in general was no worse than the concrete of my practice routes. When the asphalt was quite smooth, I took advantage and ran faster. The hills were not a serious problem. On the first descent, I felt the need to hold myself back; on later hills, I just ran without much thought. The ascents didn't bother me much; maybe the last one made me work a bit, but no, I definitely had the cojones to pull through the race harder if I had more confidence in the toughness of my feet. There was one other issue; I think last night's pizza wasn't the greatest idea, and there was a hint of a side stitch in the last mile. Maybe I would have run harder if I hadn't been worried about that, but I think I did a negative split anyway. Pushed the hardest in the last quarter mile, and felt strong at the finish.

Post-run, my feet feel a bit hot, and there may be a small blister or two, but not enough to merit any medical attention or even whining. Left ankle slightly sore, but not bad so far.
