I ventured East on the coming of a string of overcast cool/rainy days. I had to stay on the highway for 2miles due to construction but it was a generous gravel shoulder other than the bridge over the interstate. I did hop on the bike path after 2 miles even though it still said "Closed". I followed that to the next town, Cambridge. So it looks like I can go East or West, hit the next town, and return in about 9miles.
