Warmed up with Hugh for 3..3 miles on the course. Warm up felt sluggish until the last mile. The first mile is up a hill so that doesn't help. Race started at 8:30 am and a little cold at 30 F, but warmed up quickly on the course. I was glad I didn't wear the headband, but did wear gloves and 2 shirts. Just a bit too warm but not bad.

The 5K and 10K started together at 8:30 am. First mile is up a hill and ran it in 6:16, only 1 second slower than last year. Passed the most people in the race going up the hill. After that maybe 1 or 2 people once we got to the top. Second mile was also 6:16 and downhill. Mile 3 in 6:09 and I think the first 5K the clock read 19:25.

At this point running 104 miles last weekend and maybe the extra 8.5 lbs heavier than last year's race caught up to me since mile 4 on the flat trail was 6:19. The last 3.1 miles of the 10K was out and back on the trail.

I was really looking forward to the turnaround. I could see one runner ahead of me a bit. Mile 5 was 6:27 and feeling like I am ready for this to be over. I see I am in 6 place overall, and 5th male. The first master's runner is just ahead of me. Mile 6 a little faster in 6:21 and last 0.26 in 6:19 pace, overall time is 39:24. Last year I ran a PR on this course in 38:31 so quite happy with my time since I wasn't sure I would have any speed today.

I got the medal for 1st place 40 - 49. One runner in my age group was in the top 3 and the other was 1st place master's so actually got 3rd. Overall placed 6th. There was a drawing after and Hugh's number was drawn and mine immediately following. He took a certificate for 2 box lunches at Honey Baked Ham and I took a certificate for a large pizza at Kostakis. These were the same restaurants we both selected last year when our numbers were drawn. Also, had lots of candy after the race, coffee, bagels, and water. There were kid's races in between the 5K and 10K awards. The race was to benefit the Foundation for the Higher Good http://www.thehighergood.org/. Once again, an excellent event!
