Notes

Hugh and I traveled with a friend to run this race. We had tickets to eat pancakes before we left so wasn't too sure how those would feel during the race. We ate pancakes at about 6:30 am and picked Dan up at 6:55 and arrived in Sedalia just after 7 am. We lucked out on the weather since it was about 36 F. It was a bit windy but always seems to be for this race. Today, it snowed a lot so if the weather had been one day off this race would not have happened. We picked up our packets when we arrived. This year the shirts were different since they said "RACE SHIRT" on them.

Several of us went out to run a few warm up miles. I ended up running 2.5 miles and then back to the bathroom 1 more time. The race had an early start option so a few people started at 8:30 am and the rest of us at 9 am. Race headquarters are at an elementary school and we walked over to a residential area to start. There is also a 5K starting at the same time. I lined up in front and really didn't see anyone that I thought looked that fast. The first mile we run a loop in the residential area that goes back to the school and then down a road and are soon in a rural area. There are a couple turns and then we come back to the school. After the first mile, I was in 5th place and close behind another guy but he slowly pulled further ahead and wasn't that close after awhile.

I didn't have a plan other than to try to run 6:30 miles. Not really much happened during this race. The first turn was just before 4 miles. The course is pretty flat but some minor hills. The next turn was at about 5 miles and this was into the wind which made it more difficult but held close to 6:30 pace pretty well. When I got close to the turnaround, I saw the 4 guys ahead of me. The guy that was I was close to after the first mile was in 2nd. The guy in 4th wasn't close enough for me to catch unless he was going to slow down. The turnaround was at 7 miles so was nice to have the wind behind but also felt warmer with no wind. I wore my Burning River shirt and it was perfect for this weather since I was able to use the thumb holes in the sleeves and didn't need to wear gloves. There were 5 opportunities for water on the course and only used 3. I didn't use any gels. I don't feel like I need anything for a half marathon anymore.

The last turn on the way back felt the wind again, but didn't feel too bad. Stomach maybe was a little iffy during the run so not sure if pancakes were a good idea but I survived. Slowed a bit in the last 2 miles.

Hugh was 2nd in age group 55 - 59. He wasn't real happy with his time 1:54 but actually better than he expected this time. We each got a glass brick block to add to our collection of many from past years.
