Garmin: 5.11 miles

My first race longer than a 5k, and I'm very pleased with the results. Missed several runs in the last week due to a cold, so I was unsure how this would turn out. My goal was to go sub-40, but I wasn't sure if I'd be able to do it since I was still feeling pretty congested. I started with the sub-8 group, which was definitely a good idea because the other group had thousands more runners than ours did. My first half mile or so was at around a 6:45 pace, but it felt pretty easy and I was basically just going at the speed of those around me. I settled down to a more comfortable pace for the rest of the race until the last mile, and averaged a low-7 for the first 4 miles. The fifth mile I was feeling good, so I sped up and ran it much faster - just a bit slower than my 5k pace. I was really surprised that I was able to do that 4 miles in. I think the combination between winter running track work and half-marathon distance training is really paying off - I'm feeling fitter than I did during cross country season and look forward to doing a road 5k sometime soon. My mile splits make me think I could've gone faster since I still had energy left at the end, so I hope to run another 8k when I'm feeling better to compare.
